This week in streaming: Stan goes Cosmopolitan and Netflix explores the mind of a sinner

From the supernatural mysteries of Riverdale to the black humour of Patriot, there's a whole lot to love in this week's line-up of streaming new releases.

Halloween may be over, but horror fans still have plenty of spine-chilling tales to delight in this week courtesy of Netflix. First up is the second season of The Sinner, the dark drama series that explores the minds and motivations behind those who commit the most brutal of crimes. Bill Pullman makes his return in the second season as Detective Harry Ambrose, this time tasked with uncovering the story behind the poisoning of a husband and wife by their 13-year-old son.

The grim tone continues with the premiere of Riverdale Season 3. Series protagonist Archie finds himself at the mercy of a jury after being charged with murder, while Betty and Jughead put on their detective hats and attempt to unravel more of the mystery behind the weird goings-on in their hometown.

Kill-or-be-killed takes on a different meaning with Stan's biggest new release this week. The first two seasons of The Bold Type make their debut on the streaming service, presenting a fictional spin on the cut-throat world of fashion journalism. Inspired by the real-life tale of Joanna Coles, editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan, the show follows three young and determined women working for Scarlet magazine and explores the challenges they face both in their professional and personal lives.

Not real enough for you? Then you'll want to tune into hayu instead, where two heavyweights of the reality TV industry make their return this week. Both The Real Housewives of New Jersey and The Real Housewives of Atlanta kick off brand new seasons, with the New Jersey gang back for their 9th season and the Atlanta crew entering their 11th cycle of dirt and drama.

Amazon Prime Video instils a little more levity in the darkness with the arrival of the second season of the comedy drama series Patriot. Starring New Zealand's own Michael Dorman as an undercover intelligence officer, the show balances black humour with thoughtful reflections on the nature of political espionage and the toll it takes on the people involved.

Closing out this week's line-up on a lighter note is the addition of the first four seasons of You're the Worst to SBS On Demand's growing library. The dramatic comedy centres on the turbulent relationship between a conceited writer and a hedonistic PR exec, using their chaotic dynamic to explore issues like depression, commitment and self-destruction.
