This week in streaming: The Simpsons goes medieval

Matt Sayer 13 August 2018 NEWS

Matt Groening makes his long-awaited return to TV in a bumper week for Aussie streaming services.

Do you like cartoons? Then buckle up, because this week has more animated adventures than you can poke a cel-shaded finger at.

Netflix serves up the biggest banger of the week with the debut of Disenchantment. Created by Matt Groening, the acclaimed mind behind The Simpsons and Futurama, Disenchantment opts for a more mature tone than Groening's previous work. The show follows an alcoholic princess named Bean and her two companions, a ribald elf and her very own demon. The trio journey through the medieval world of Dreamland and get up to all sorts of wild shenanigans.

Over on Stan, the animation fixation continues with the first season of Looped. Taking a more family-friendly approach than Disenchantment, Looped sees two young school friends trapped in a time loop and forced to repeat the same Monday over and over again. The pair quickly seize upon their Groundhog Day level of knowledge of the day's events to cause havoc at their school and live out the childish dream of chaos without consequence.

No cartoons for Foxtel subscribers this week, but there's still plenty of blockbuster drama to binge on. The Walking Dead spin-off Fear The Walking Dead kicks off the second half of its fourth season with plenty of grim and gruesome action as the survivors continue to struggle against their fellow humans. Meanwhile, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson lightens the mood with the premiere of Ballers Season 4, where his career managing an NFL team gets even wilder with cable TV deals, X-Games partnerships and no shortage of extravagant parties.

If you're looking for something a little more grounded, you probably won't find it over at hayu this week. The third season of The Real Housewives of Dallas debuts on Thursday (the same day as the US) and you can bet that it will deliver plenty of over-the-top drama very few of us can relate to.

Football fans (of the nets and headers kind) have good reason to tune into Amazon Prime Video this week, as the original documentary All or Nothing: Manchester City reveals the oftentimes extreme measures Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola took to push his team to victory during the 2017-18 Premier League season.

SBS On Demand closes the week with a docu-series that hits quite close to home. Filthy Rich & Homeless explores the difficulties faced by those living on the Sydney streets, with Cameron Daddo and 4 other wealthy Aussies shedding the trappings of their privileged lives and spending 10 days without money, phones or a place to call home.
