The biggest new releases coming to Netflix, Stan, hayu, Foxtel and more this week

August kicks off with hours of hot new entertainment to binge on.

The start of a new month is always a thrilling time in the world of streaming. There are so many new movies and TV shows that even the most dedicated binge-watchers have plenty to keep them glued to the couch.

Netflix subscribers, for example, can spend this week getting reacquainted with the tense action of Shooter, which is locked and loaded for a third season of conspiratorial hijinks. Also returning for its third season is the far less deadly Dinotrux Supercharged, the Dreamworks animated series that takes two already indisputably cool topics and blends them together for plenty of kid-friendly fun.

The line-up over on Stan is equally varied, with the period drama Indignation taking a trip back to the 1950s and exploring heady topics like anti-Semitism and sexual repression against the backdrop of the Korean War. Contrasting this is the fast-paced action of Nerve, a thriller that follows a high-school student participating in an online game of truth or dare that quickly escalates from fun to fatal.

As usual, Foxtel has bagged itself plenty of big-name movies to kick off August. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets sees Cara Delevingne (Suicide Squad) and Dane DeHaan (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) play the role of interstellar special operatives tasked with defending the cultural centre of the universe from a dark, unknown force, while Baby Driver slams the pedal to the metal for some good ol' fashioned heist-movie action.

If you're in the mood for some glitzy reality TV, hayu has you well and truly sorted this week. The seventh season of Shahs of Sunset premieres the same day as it does in the US, providing another candid glimpse into the lives of rich Persian-Americans attempting to balance their glamorous LA dreams with the expectations of their cultural heritage.

Amazon Prime Video opts for a more down-to-earth approach this week, with ex-Top Gear host Richard Hammond's Engineering Connections docu-series diving into the technological marvels that power our modern world. Meanwhile, for entertainment buffs on a budget, free service SBS On Demand reins in the third season of the popular period drama Versailles.
