The biggest new releases coming to Netflix, Stan, hayu and Foxtel this week

Matt Sayer 14 May 2018 NEWS

Royal weddings and lessons in depression make this one of 2018's most important weeks for streaming TV.

An eclectic line-up of TV and movies awaits streaming subscribers this week, with everything from devastating dramas to ribald comedies to royal nuptials delivering entertainment to your streaming device of choice.

The highlight of the week is undoubtedly the return of Netflix's hit heart string-tugger 13 Reasons Why. After wading into the turbulent waters of depression and suicide in Season 1, Season 2 of the confronting series aims to shed new light on the events leading up to Hannah Baker's death, reframing Hannah's story in a way that reveals her life was even more complex than you first thought.

Netflix is also introducing a bit of local flavour this week with the arrival of Cargo. Set in a Mad Max-esque vision of post-apocalyptic Australia, the gritty thriller was born from a Tropfest short film created by Aussie filmmakers Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling. This bigger-budget rendition of the duo's story stars Martin Freeman of Sherlock, The Hobbit and Fargo fame, and incorporates Aboriginal actors and culture into its plot.

The mood is significantly lighter over at Stan this week. Quirky crime comedy Swedish Dicks kicks off its second season, diving deeper into the irreverent exploits of a pair of Swedish private detectives working off-the-books in Los Angeles. The series is both created by and stars the ever-enthralling Peter Stormare (Prison Break, John Wick: Chapter Two), making it an enjoyable watch for Stormare's gravelly voice alone.

Foxtel is taking a similarly cheery approach with its schedule. First, there's The Emoji Movie, which takes those tiny icons you know and love and throws them onto the big screen – with decidedly questionable results. Still, it might be a decent distraction for your kids. Otherwise, you could satisfy your lust for juicy goss with the premiere of the 17th season of Geordie Shore, or watch live coverage of the Royal Wedding with E!.

There's more wedding coverage over on hayu this Sunday, too, with E! breaking down all the noteworthy news from the extravagant event. The third season of Below Deck Mediterranean also makes its way to hayu this week, giving reality TV lovers plenty of fresh scandal to feast upon.
