Watch The Mandalorian on Disney+: Cast, date, plot, review
In a galaxy far, far away, the first live-action Star Wars TV series has been made and the Mandalorian is out in time for the Disney+ launch.
The streaming wars are heating up, with Disney+ set to take Australia by storm from 19 November. We're not yet sure who will play Empire and who will play Rebellion when it comes to Disney+ vs Netflix, but we can't wait to find out. Perhaps the Mandalorian will sway your opinion. While this new Star Wars TV series will be available in the US from 12 November, Aussie fans have to wait another week to get a peek at the goods.
The new online streaming TV service will arrive with a generous content library. It's no surprise. Disney extends well beyond Disney's own films and TV shows, to include Pixar, Lucasfilm, National Geographic, 20th Century Fox and Marvel. Some content might not be available in Australia at launch due to ongoing deals with local services, but still, there's plenty to look forward to.
Add in the fact the platform will cost just $8.99/month, which is less than competitors like Netflix, and it's a pretty sweet deal. New subscribers also get a one-week free trial to play around with Disney+ before opening their wallets.
Besides the epic back catalogue of content, the new service will stream original series and movies as well. One of the most anticipated titles scheduled to drop on Disney+ is The Mandalorian, the first live-action TV series set in the Star Wars universe.
When is The Mandalorian coming out?
The first episode will be available on Disney+ when the service launches on 12 November, with the second landing on 15 November. After that, episodes will be released weekly, starting from 22 November.
As a result, there will be at least two episodes of The Mandalorian on Disney+ when it becomes available in Australia. With a third landing just three days later.
What is The Mandalorian about?
The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. To be more precise, the show is set seven years after Return of the Jedi. The series follows in the bounty hunter tradition of Boba and Jango Fett. Our star is a lone gunman on the fringes of the galaxy, far enough away from the New Republic this part of the galaxy is effectively lawless.
According to creator Jon Favreau, the show focuses on brand new characters in such a fashion that even if you've never seen Star Wars before, you can hit the ground running.
Who stars in The Mandalorian?
Pedro Pascal will play the lone gunfighter and bounty hunter. You might know him from Game of Thrones and Narcos. He leads a pretty star-studded cast, which includes Giancarlo Esposito as Moff Gideon, a former governor under the Empire, and Gina Carano as Cara Dune, a former Rebel Shock Trooper-turned-mercenary.
The series will also feature Nick Nolte, Carl Weathers, Taika Waititi, Werner Herzog, Emily Swallow, Omid Abtahi, Ming-Na Wen and Julia Jones.
The Mandalorian review: Is it any good?
Few new TV launches are as sure a bet as The Mandalorian. The show reportedly had a $100 million budget for its first season, which will consist of 10 episodes. Plus, Jon Favreau, who is behind the show, has enjoyed plenty of success in the Marvel Universe. It was there he served as an executive producer on blockbusters like The Avengers, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home and more. He also directed Iron Man and Iron Man 2.
The quality of the cast is undeniable and the Star Wars universe is rich enough to allow for new fascinating stories to emerge. Plus, early reactions were largely positive. The initial 30 minutes of footage shown prior to the Disney+ launch resulted in a tonne of praise from excited journos.
"Feels more western than sci-fi – from the shootouts to the stand-offs to the Vidalia onion stew a new droid character named Gramps is always doting over. We are entering a new phase of Star Wars and the future is looking bright!," Ben Mekler tweeted.
"It feels like a thrilling return to the original trilogy era of Star Wars. It feels like a big scale movie, not a TV series," according to Peter Sciretta.
All in all, The Mandalorian might be reason enough to convince a whole lot of Star Wars fans to subscribe to yet another streaming service. The first big hit for Disney+ will come at launch. We highly recommend you give it a stream and decide for yourself if the wait for the first live-action Star Wars series was worth it.
