At Surry Hills’ newest hot (or should that be cold?) spot you can build your own gelato. Stix Desserts is shaking up the ice cream game.
I guarantee you’ve never seen a gelato display quite like the one at Stix Desserts.
Instead of ice cream tubs, you’ll find wall-to-wall sticks of gelato. Yes, sticks – not tubs. Your approach to flavour country is threefold:
- Choose your Stix flavour. They have almost two dozen on display, just to make this decision harder.
- Dunk it in your choice of sauce. White chocolate, dark chocolate, or coffee?
- Top it! Caramel popcorn is our favourite (there’s usually eight or so toppings on rotation).
I can hear Daft Punk singing about it now… Choose it, dunk it, top it – repeat it. Yeah. I could definitely get behind this.
The choose-your-own-dessert means that regulars will never have to have the same gelato twice – quelle horreur. Unless, of course, you hit a combination so perfect it renders all other flavours obsolete. Challenge accepted.
Isabella Chan and Veronica Chung are the two best friends who opened Stix Desserts. I caught up with Isabella to chat about this latest Surry Hills hotspot.
Where did the idea for Stix Desserts come from?
Veronica and I both love our sweet treats, so we are always looking out for new places to visit and indulge ourselves. The gelato on a stick concept has been around Italy for sometime but all pre-decorated. We thought that we'd take it a step further by offering dippings and toppings so that the customer can customise their own gelato Stix!
Why did you decide to open?
We have both been in different industries for over 10 years. Veronica in fashion and me in financial planning and it kind of started as a joke. Then the more we looked into this, the more convinced we both were that we wanted to implement and achieve something for ourselves before we reach the big 40!
How many flavours do you have on the go at any one time?
Last weekend we had 18 different flavours which are rotated all the time.
Which have been the most popular?
Our hazelnut, salted caramel and pomegranate are some of the favourites. Other popular combinations include pomegranate dunked in dark chocolate topped with caramel popcorn, and salted caramel dunked in milk chocolate topped with violet crumble.
Our toppings change so you can always have something different!
Do you have a favourite?
My personal favourite is the pink grapefruit sorbet, dunked in white chocolate and topped with almond flakes.
With that in mind, we’ll just be holding out for the next unseasonably warm day to get our gelato on.
