Star Wars: Battlefront 2 aiming for 14 November 2017 release date

Recent reveals by Electronic Arts regarding the past and future of the Star Wars Battlefront series point towards the sequel landing on 14 November next year.

It seems like the world simply cannot get enough of all things Star Wars at the moment, and it’s not just the movies hogging fans’ search bars. The return of the Star Wars Battlefront series in 2015, at the hands of combat maestros DICE (who also develop the Battlefield games), was met with plenty of enthusiasm. While it didn’t quite land with critics, the game has sold just over 11 million units to date, including 7.3 million on PlayStation 4, the fifth-highest selling game on the format to date.

Did you know an HD remake of PC classic X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter almost happened in 2009?

Despite the commercial success, its average rating of 7.5 is below the standard of modern blockbusters, and many players lamented the lack of content – in particular, any single player campaign – on offer. The criticism has been enough for EA to come out and reveal that there was intent to offer a single player campaign in last year’s game, but it was superseded by a desire to ensure a finished product was out prior to the Star Wars: The Force Awakens film. Essentially this was so the game could ride on the coattails of the movie’s marketing blitzkrieg - and given the sales results, who’s to argue with that business decision?

EA Studios boss Patrick Söderlund made the following statement earlier today. "The one thing that we got criticised for was the lack of a single-player campaign. It was a conscious decision we made due to time and being able to launch the game side-by-side with the movie that came out to get the strongest possible impact."

Just last week, EA chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen revealed the following about the publisher’s plans for the series: "We'll most likely have at least one Star Wars title a year over the next three to four years. Next year, we will see Star Wars Battlefront back, with bigger and better worlds, because we now have the new movies to work off, not just the historical movies that we used before.”

So let’s join the dots between these two statements.

Electronic Arts has made it clear that it wants to release its Star Wars games ahead of the launch of a big movie. It has also stated that Star Wars Battlefront 2 is a 2017 project. Last year, Star Wars: The Force Awakens film came out on Friday, December 18 and Star Wars: Battlefront came out a month earlier on Tuesday, November 17.

In 2017, Star Wars Episode VIII is coming on Friday, 15 December. Therefore, to stay true to form, it’s highly likely that Star Wars Battlefront 2 will land on Tuesday, 14 November. And you’d have to suggest it will arrive with a healthy single-player campaign, too.
