The arrival of new streaming platform Paramount Plus to the scene will cause a few headaches for existing streamers.

At a time when many already feel there is an over-saturation of streaming platforms, Paramount Plus has just thrown its hat into the ring. But the bottom line with all platforms is "content is king" and the new service is bringing plenty with it.

While Paramount Plus already pledges it has "more than 20,000 hours of content", including a raft of classic movies and TV shows, that library will only grow. Some of it will come from fresh, original content and still more will arrive from other platforms, including Australian streaming site Stan.

Paramount is owned by ViacomCBS, which also owns television network Showtime. While Stan has enjoyed a licensing agreement to show a number of Showtime programs, that has already ended for some titles and will continue as contracts end. Here are some of the top picks.

Ray Donovan

If you have not yet familiarised yourself with this show, now is the time. Liev Schreiber is Ray Donovan, a man who gets things done by any means necessary in an effort to protect his clients. He is also trying to juggle a complicated family life.

Dexter

A forensic analyst that hides a very dark side, Dexter proved a game-changer in television drama in the way it portrayed a serial killer holding down a seemingly normal life. Thrilling fans for 8 seasons, a new spinoff series is set for later in 2021.

Californication

With question marks over how David Duchovny could follow-up his role in the hugely successful X-Files in the 90s, it took a few years before he landed on Californication. Playing a New York writer who moves to Los Angeles carrying writer's block, the risqué comedy-drama ran for 7 seasons and enjoyed a cult following.

Twin Peaks

Speaking of cult following, Twin Peaks genuinely shocked the world when it was released in 1990. From the brilliant mind of David Lynch (Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive), it is a moody horror mystery series that ran for just 2 seasons and had a profound impact on the industry.

House of Lies

A comedy series that divided critics in the United States, it is based around the life of management consultant Marty Kaan, played by Don Cheadle. As the title suggests, House of Lies delves deeply into some immoral, manipulative behaviour in Kaan's business and personal life over 5 seasons.
