Every game from the Square Enix E3 2018 conference

Brodie Fogg 12 June 2018 NEWS

No Avengers for you! Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Monster Hunter X Final Fantasy Online, The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit and more took the spotlight in Square Enix's conference.

While many E3 conferences so far have mixed up the formula with on-stage antics (EA Play) and a rapid-fire of in-jokes (Bethesda), Square Enix played it safe with a more traditional round of trailers, reveals and more Keith David than any of us deserve. Square Enix also broke the mold this year by... uh... not really showing much of anything.

First up was Shadow of the Tomb Raider with a much deeper look at the game's improved stealth and combat mechanics. Lara goes full Dutch in her third outing since the series' outstanding top-to-bottom renovation, using the environment to better conceal herself and become the ultimate predator. Is it too late to pull the Predator out of retirement for one more DLC cameo?

Next up was some love for the Square Enix's immensely popular Final Fantasy XIV Stormblood with two reveals: Under the Moonlight Patch 4.3 and what's that? The pitter-patter of tiny cat paws? Yep, looks like our best Palicoes are bringing the hunt to Final Fantasy XIV with a Monster Hunter crossover event.

Next up, we've got various illustrations of superheroes and monsters... one looks a lot like Iron Man... could it be? The Avengers game we've been waiting for? Yep, it's a trailer for the free Life is Strange prequel The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit. Admittedly, this looks adorable and the team at Dontnod have a near-flawless track record with the series.

Some shadowy figures, the iconic stylings of Akira Toriyama. Of course, it wouldn't be a Square Enix show without some kind of Dragon Quest presence. The news here is that Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age has a release date and a new trailer; coming 4 September to North America and Europe.

Dragon Quest is followed by a series of flashing title cards with mountains of dates, lore and concept art for a game we know nothing about (interesting?). The game is called Babylon's Fall. It looks like it could be a lore-heavy boss-fight extravaganza courtesy of Platinum Games.

Another teaser trailer for 2B's XB ENHANCED ADVENTURE on Microsoft's side of the tracks, Nier Automata: BECOME AS GODS.

Eight brave souls, eight classes, eight paths to take. Ohh, Octopath. I get it now. Excuse me while I take a match to my search history.

I'm actually incredibly keen for Octopath Traveler on Nintendo Switch. It has a refreshingly accessible story for a JRPG and its combat has a steady pace that I can get used to. There's a demo up on the Nintendo eshop if you haven't checked it out already.

Next trailer is the whirlwind of madness that is Just Cause 4. Rico's return takes him to a vast fictional South American country with extreme weather effects like whirlwinds, lightning, sandstorms and blizzards; and new vehicles like jetskis and microjets. The iconic grapple is now customisable with loads of add-on options to really push the limits of what a grappling hook can do. This game is going to be a streamer's Wonderland.

Has anyone else noticed that Rico is slowly morphing into Nathan Drake?

Another mysterious trailer with little information, except this time it kicks off in live action. The Quiet Man seems to be about a hearing-impaired punk beating down on gang members and leaving them a packed lunch before going on his way? That's all I've got.

It's Sora, Goofy, Donald and Elsa. The whole gang has returned from yesterday's trailer at the Xbox conference with no additional footage and almost no diegetic sound effects whatsoever. Bold move.

There you have it, some great news for Final Fantasy XV online fans but otherwise not a lot of what we haven't seen already. No, there were not any Avengers present at this conference. Hopefully, Square Enix is saving that reveal for Sony's show later today.
