Are there any travel insurance companies that cover volcano eruption related delays?

    • Staff
      RichardAugust 10, 2015Staff

      Hi Steve,

Thanks for your question. It depends on the policy, the provider and when you took out the cover. Most basic policies wont cover things such as delays caused by volcanic ash. Comprehensive policies do sometimes cover this. However, these situations are only covered if they are classed as unforeseen events. Therefore you won’t be able to get cover for cancellation or delay from the ash-cloud Bali if you’ve taken out a policy now.

Does your comprehensive international cover for a couple cover all cancellation costs.
Please advise if there are any exclusions.
e.g. do you cover inability to travel due to illness in self or family

      Hi Josephine,

Thanks for your question. is a comparison service and not an insurer. The comprehensive policy does cover cancellation and alterations. There are several exclusions and you can find them by consulting section 2 of the SCTI PDS.

To what does “cash allowance” refer to in the hospitalization section of the SC travel insurance policy? Is that the per diem payment for incidentals such as food, hotel room, transportation, etc.?

      Hi Marcia,

Thanks for your question. Yes, a hospital cash allowance is for pretty much per diem payment for incidentals you incur while in hospital.

      Hi Melinda,

Thanks for your question. Unfortunately, is a comparison site and not an insurer. Southern Cross Travel Insurance do provide a one way travel insurance policy for those already overseas. For more information about this type of cover, please have a look at our One Way Travel Insurance page.

We are going on a 35 day Cruise To Hawaii, Tahiti, & South Pacific, and will be spending only 5 Days in the Hawaiian Islands, Do I Have to apply for a World cover which includes USA & Canada Plan.???

      Hi David,

Thanks for your question. When it comes to travel insurance, you generally have to select the region where you will be spending the most amount of time. According to the SCTI website you must select the USA travel plan if you are planning on entering the Canada or USA and are not in transit with an immediate connection to a country other than the USA or Canada.

      I hope this was helpful,
