Soon we’ll be able to fly from London to Sydney in two hours

A successful test flight of a hypersonic jet points to a much less stressful travel future.

American and Australian military scientists tested the revolutionary jet in South Australia, where it reached speeds of Mach 7.5 (equivalent to 9,200kph). This is classed as a "hypersonic jet" - which means it travels at more than five times the speed of sound.

There is a total of ten tests being completed, with the last one planned for 2018. Does this mean in a few short years we could be jetting to London for a weekend break?

In addition to the impressive Sydney to London flight time, transatlantic New York to London flights could take just 35 minutes - quicker than most people could get to an airport.

Several companies are involved in working with hypersonic jets, such as the Concorde 2 (known as "Son of Concorde") which is being developed by Airbus.

Sydney to London is a popular route taken by thousands of people per year with a flight time of at east 23 hours It's a minimum two-leg flight with stopovers generally in Asia and the Middle East. We've seen flights take up to 48 hours (often for a reduced price!) with 2+ stopovers and long wait times.

This type of revolution in flight travel time is reminiscent of 1980s and 1990s Concorde travel, which was classed as supersonic (travelling at twice the speed of sound). Concorde enabled passengers to fly from New York to London in 3 hours - still over 4 times the duration of this new development. Concorde was often rumoured to be examining Sydney-London flights, but none ever eventuated.

It's becoming more challenging to travel to Europe in comfort. Singapore Airlines recently restricted the ability for passengers to use points to upgrade from economy to business class.
