Sony launches Xperia XZ3

Sony's new flagship Xperia XZ3 Android phone will "predict" the apps you most want to use, and shuffle them around to make them easier to access.

At the IFA show overnight, Sony announced its latest flagship device, the Sony Xperia XZ3.

The Xperia XZ3 features a 6-inch 18:9 QHD+ (2880x1440) OLED display, behind which you'll find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC and 4GB of RAM. The Sony Xperia XZ3 will be available with 64GB of onboard storage only, but storage expansion via microSD is supported.

The Xperia XZ3 follows the new design language introduced with the existing Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 compact, with sleek sides and a curved 3D glass front. Like the Xperia XZ2, it supports both high definition audio and Sony's quirky dynamic vibration system for force feedback in games, video and music playback.

Pocket-friendly power

Don't let its size fool you: the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact is just as capable as its larger competitors in the premium smartphone space. See for yourself by picking one up today.

The Sony Xperia XZ3 will be one of the first phones to launch with Android 9 ("Pie") on board, and Sony is further tweaking it with AI features that it's dubbing side sense. Where HTC is using squeezes on the sides to launch apps, the Xperia XZ3 will use a double tap to bring frequently used or desired apps within easy tapping reach.

On the camera front, there's still no sign of a dual lens camera on a Sony phone, even though it did show off dual lens camera arrays at MWC 2018. Instead, the Xperia XZ3 features a 13MP front camera and 19MP rear camera. Like the Xperia XZ2, there's support for 4K HDR movie recording, as well as 960fps slow motion at 1080p resolution.

The Sony Xperia XZ2 is Sony's newest flagship phone with a radical new look, super-slow motion video at Full HD and a premium processor. It's available now on contract with Telstra.

Sony hasn't announced Australian availability for the Xperia XZ3 just yet. It will launch in Europe next month at a suggested price of £699. At current exchange rates that would suggest a price point around $1,299 locally, but we'll have to wait and see. Sony typically takes a couple of months post-launch to bring handsets to our shores.
