Snapchat or SMS? How Aussies deal with the stress of “chat choice”

Should I call, text or Facebook? A new survey suggests it's a major worry.

Having a mobile phone should make it easy to stay in touch, but having so many potential ways to communicate can actually be a source of stress.

Nearly 50% of people aged under 24 stress about choosing the "right" way to message someone, according to a survey of 1,000 people released by mobile service provider amaysim. In the same age group, 73% have identified specific methods they prefer for each individual: Snapchat for your partner, calling on the mobile for your parents, Facebook Messenger for friends.

That's much less of an issue for Australians aged 55 or over, with 82% saying they essentially never worry about which method to use. (Yes, that might well be because they've never heard of Snapchat.)

The most popular means of communicating also vary heavily by age, as you can see in the chart below, which features the top 5 options as chosen by different age groups:

The 18-24 age group was the only one to rank Snapchat in its top 5, with 50% of young types regularly using it. Conversely, Skype only made an appearance for the 65+ crowd.

Calling on a mobile phone remains the top-ranked form of voice communication across all age groups. Landline phones show a steady decline based on age, with 82% of the 65+ group using them while they don't even rate a place in the top 5 for the 18-24 crowd.

One other point to note: 95% of Australians never use payphones. Obviously, this is not a surprise.

amaysim tweaked its plans earlier this year, with major increases in data allowances but also a controversial switch from 30-day to 28-day charging.

To coincide with the survey, amaysim also released a tongue-in-cheek video looking at different communication options, which you can check out below.
