Skoda Superb Reviews from around the web

Overview...

The Skoda Superb is a near perfect sedan or wagon that is extremely well equipped. In fact, it's so good that the automotive media had to get extraordinarily picky to offer any critique. In summary, it's a class-leading benchmark.

Engine and performance

For 2019 Superb models, Skoda has dropped the diesel option. That decision leaves buyers with the choice between two turbocharged, four-cylinder petrol engines. Both engines share a 2.0-litre capacity and both deliver 350Nm of torque. However, one of the engines produces 162kW, while the other engine generates 206kW. Peak power kicks in at different revs. On the Style 2.0-litre engines, maximum kilowatts are achieved at 6,200rpm. SportLine Superbs rev harder, with maximum power at 6,500rpm.

Skoda put the higher output engine in the SportLine 4x4 model. Performance wise, the lower power engine is able to go from 0-100km/h in 7.1 seconds. For SportLine cars, this takes a brisk 5.8 seconds.

Reviewers thoughts on the Skoda Superb engine/gearbox line-up

How did reviewers rate these engines? Unanimously, the 162kW engine was said to be solid but reviewers felt it lagged (likely due to the nature of turbocharged engines) when initially setting off.

Bolted to the engine is a six-speed, dual-clutch, automatic direct-shift gearbox (DSG). Most of the road testers felt the transmission shifted well but expressed slight discontentment with the tardiness when setting off. SportLine Superbs come with paddle shifters for a motorsport-like sensation when manually switching through cogs.

Fuel efficiency

Motoring journalists typically felt the car provided good fuel consumption.

For the 162kW Superb sedan, fuel usage is listed as follows:

  • Combined: 6.6L/100km
  • Urban: 8.2L/100km
  • Extra urban: 5.6L/100km

The sedan will use more fuel if it is paired with the higher power 206kW engine, thanks in part to the extra potency but also thanks to the increased driveline mass due to the all-wheel-drive transmission:

  • Combined: 7.3L/100km
  • Urban: 9.1L/100km
  • Extra urban: 6.3L/100km

Wagon models differ slightly too, as they weigh a couple of dozen extra kilos. For the 162kW Skoda Superb wagon, fuel usage is as follows:

  • Combined: 6.7L/100km
  • Urban: 8.3L/100km
  • Extra urban: 5.8L/100km

And for the high-power Wagon models, there's no difference in fuel consumption compared to the high-power sedan. Presumably, the extra oomph compensates for the slightly increased weight:

  • Combined: 7.3L/100km
  • Urban: 9.1L/100km
  • Extra urban: 6.3L/100km

Official figures, derived from 81/02 ADR tests, differ from real-world figures. Skoda lists possible reasons for differences including driving styles, road conditions, traffic, environmental factors, the state of the vehicle and the number of accessories fitted. So the brochure numbers should really only be used for comparing different models.

Car reviewers generally were given SportLine 4x4 models to drive. They may be driving in a more spirited manner than normal road users, but one outlet achieved a still respectable 10.1L/100km, while another recorded 8.0L/100km.

Testers thought that the Skoda Superb, in either the Style or SportLine variants, was decent. However, many recommended opting for the adaptive chassis control (ACC) that comes with the optional Tech pack.

This lets you alter the suspension and performance on the go. On long distance motorway journeys, you can tap into Comfort mode. When you wish to have a bit of fun, there’s a Sports mode that tightens everything up. The consensus was the car is pretty well-planted.

The steering is said to be direct and precise, although there is a tendency for the car to understeer. To be fair though, very few drivers will find that an issue in everyday trips. To get a true sense of how the Superb handles, you should head to your nearest dealer.

Interior and other features

When looking through the spec sheet for this car's cabin, there's very little missing from the Skoda Superb's interior.

To start with, the Superb is roomy. Universally, all journalists enjoyed the spaciousness found in the passenger seats. There's a ton of head, elbow and leg room. The rear occupants, according to reviewers, have near limo levels of space to stretch out in. That's probably why you'll note the Superb is used around the globe as a car to transport VIP and government officials.

A few testers had gripes with the front seats on the sport model, describing them as a little snug for those with broader shoulders.

Whether as a sedan or a wagon, the Superb makes for a practical family car. Dotted around the cabin are ample storage pockets, compartments and bins. There's even an indoor storage slot built into the front doors – with drainage for two included umbrellas! Skoda also includes clever netting that secures loads and a rechargeable torch in the boot space.

The interior of the base spec model is pretty luxurious, with many features you'd expect on cars costing a lot more money. For example, there is the large infotainment screen with built-in sat nav and smartphone connectivity. There are also a number of smart-driving assists like adaptive cruise, emergency braking, blind-spot detection and rear traffic alerts.

Verdict

The majority of reviewers said this mid-range sedan and wagon lived up to its name. The pricing is competitive and the features are abundant. The Superb really does seem to be able to do everything and to do it adeptly. If you're in the market for a comfortable, fun and utterly practical sedan or wagon, the Superb has to be at the top of your list for consideration.
