Six hangover cures to curb your weekend regret

See some of the best remedies to prevent the hangover from hell.

Look, we've all been there. One minute you're having the time of your life and the next you're waking up with a pounding head, a vague memory of asking the bartender for their number and a whole lot of regret. Before threatening to join a nunnery (you won't) or to never drink again (you will), here all some less-drastic alternatives to stop your weekends ending up a nauseous disaster.

It's far easier to prevent a hangover than cure one so we're starting this guide there, but you can skip to the aftermath if you've already gone off the deep end and are reading this with one bleary eye open.

Preventative measures:

Line your stomach

Your mum probably told you this one about a thousand times and as you probably discovered by ignoring her advice, she was right. Lining the walls of your stomach with fat will help you slow down the rate of alcohol absorption.

Not only will this keep you from ending your night with your head in a bucket, it will also prevent you from getting embarrassingly drunk at your next work event.

Hit up one of the best burger joints in your area before your next night out for a meal that is both disappointment-free and potentially job-saving.

Pick a poison and stick to it

Another piece of advice we know is good but still actively choose to ignore is not mixing drinks. It may seem like a grand idea to start the night off with one (or five) espresso martinis before moving on to spirits and then, thanks to impaired decision-making, shots. However, it isn't a good idea and we all know it.

Different types of alcohol have different levels of congeners in them, meaning they'll all have a slightly different effect on you. The messy mix of beverages is basically the recipe for one whopping headache and a very unsettled stomach.

Starting off drinking something with a lower alcohol content can also accustom your body to getting drunk at a certain rate. Throw some Fireball whisky into that routine and it isn't hard to guess what happens next.

Drinking excessive amounts of any alcohol is going to give you a raging headache, but sticking to the one liquor choice may help to make it a little more manageable.

The absolute last thing you feel like doing is donning your sweatpants for a workout. Unfortunately, it might just be one of the best ways to bounce back after your "friend" convinced you tequila shots were a great idea.

After questionable levels of alcohol consumption, all the feel-good chemicals in your brain take a serious nosedive, leaving you feeling down in the dumps. Exercise is a sure-fire way to get endorphins soaring again to counteract that glum feeling. Better yet, physical activity also helps to loosen the constricted blood vessels you have to thank for your pounding headache, aiding your transition back to actual human being.

That being said, it isn't advised to jump straight into your favourite cardio workout while you're still feeling fragile. Gentle exercise like going for a walk should help you sweat out last night's regret without overdoing it, just remember to keep well-hydrated.


We all know that alcohol causes dehydration, but what you might not know is that it also impairs the kidneys' ability to concentrate urine, so you end up losing extra sodium and potassium (electrolytes) too.

The resulting imbalance can cause many hangover woes including shaking, increased heartbeat, fatigue, nausea, vomiting and frequent trips to the bathroom.

Sleeping gives your body a chance to heal, which is especially important in the instance where say, you've poisoned it with alcohol.

Having a snooze will allow your liver a chance to break down the alcohol in your system so you can get back to planning your next night out sooner.
