The purple version of the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G phone

After being thoroughly leaked over the past few days, the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE has finally been revealed at CES 2022. Here's what Australians needs to know about the new mid-range phone.

Over the past 12 months Samsung has taken its approach to the lower- and mid-range phone markets to the next level. While it has operated in this space for years, its 2020 A Series devices was the first time that it really seemed like customers were getting impressive premium features at a lower price point.

And it was refreshing to see. Over the past few years the mid-range phone market has changed dramatically. Google's release of the Pixel 3a truly changed the game for the better, offering high-end specs for well under $1,000. This resulted in companies like Apple, Huawei and then Samsung following suit.

So with the stage set, will the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE follow in the A Series footsteps? Let's take a look.

The specs

Samsung Galaxy S1 FE 5G colour options

When it comes to design, the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G looks quite similar to its regular S21 counterpart, including the left-justified camera bump.

In fact, it has the same dual 12MP main and ultra-wide lenses as the 2020 model. While it it does have a smaller 8MP telephoto lens, it balances this with a 32MP front-facing camera. For reference, the regular S21 only has a 10MP lens at the front of the device.

It also comes with a 6.4-inch FHD+ 120Hz display, which is good news for anyone who enjoys a variable refresh rate for gaming or even just smooth scrolling.

Under the hood you'll find a Exynos 990 processor (keeping in mind much of the rest of the world gets a Snapdragon 888) as well as a couple of storage and RAM options – 6GB RAM with 128GB of storage or 8GB RAM with 256GB of storage.

When it comes to the battery, it's sitting at 4,5000mAh and has 15W of wireless charging capabilities as well as reverse wireless charging.

Lastly, the Samsung Galaxy FE 5G comes with Android 12 as well as Samsung's proprietary One UI 4.
