It's worth noting that the calculated prices for Vodafone's plans vary, with a Red plan discount for customers opting for a 24- or 36-month repayment plan matched with a contract plan over that time span. We've calculated against a 24-month contract plan for both 24- and 36-month plan customers, although Vodafone's new plans do give you the flexibility to walk at any time and simply pay out your remaining handset balance if you choose.

So whose plans are best value? That's a somewhat loaded question, because your needs and budget can vary quite a lot, although in the case of a premium handset like the Galaxy Note 8, you're still going to be spending at least $70 per month to acquire one.

On a straight price basis, it might appear that Vodafone has the low price territory staked out with its $30 Red Plan, but that's a 36 month plan price. Presuming the standard 24 month contract is what you're after, Virgin Mobile's $40 plan is the lowest-cost option. The downside there, rather predictably, is that you'd be limited to a scant 2GB of data per month for usage purposes, which for a phone with CAT16 data capabilities isn't much.

Because all announced plans come with unlimited standard national calls and texts, the key points for comparison are price and data inclusions. In the mid-range data space, Virgin Mobile's $80 plan, which comes with 16GB of data and a $19 handset repayment is tough to beat over two years.

What if you want it all? Aside from joining Queen, you could opt for Optus' $160 plan, which gives you an exceptional 100GB of data each and every month, but if you're still feeling budget-conscious, Optus' limited time special on its $130 plan, dropping down to $100 with a $10 handset repayment with 30GB of data is also exceptional value. Telstra does also offer a 100GB plan, but at a price premium, although its $149 plan is worth considering if you're not a fan of handset repayments to speak of.

Another option open to you is to score the Note 8 through amaysim, where you can also get bonus credit and the option of a payment plan on the handset.
