Samsung announces Galaxy Tab S5e
Samsung isn't waiting for its Galaxy Unpacked launch to start announcing new tablets.
Samsung has announced a new member of its tablet family ahead of next week's Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event, where it's expected to unveil the Samsung Galaxy S10, Samsung Galaxy S10+ and Samsung Galaxy S10e.
The new tablet is the Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e, a 5.5mm-thin Android 9 tablet that will come in Silver, Black or Gold finishes.
Samsung's pushing onwards with support for its home-grown digital assistant Bixby, with the new tablet running Bixby 2.0 onboard for voice commands. It will also feature voice continuity so that a paired phone can be answered from the Galaxy Tab S5e directly, although Samsung notes that the feature is carrier-dependent, so we may have to wait and see if local networks support it.
The Galaxy Tab S5e comes with a 10.5-inch WQXGA Super AMOLED display and either 4GB RAM and 64GB storage or 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. Either configuration can have its storage boosted with microSD expansion cards by up to 512GB.
It will be compatible with Samsung's DeX system for virtual desktop applications and Samsung will also sell an optional keyboard case for it. That puts it in sharp contrast with the Apple iPad Pro, which also pitches itself as a "productivity" tablet.
Samsung's release notes that the Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e will come with four months of complimentary access to YouTube Premium and three months of access to Spotify Premium, though this is qualified to only be available in "selected countries". We'll have to wait and see if Samsung is that generous here in Australia.
Samsung Australia confirmed that the new Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e would be sold in Australia, but didn't state when we might see it, or any kind of indicative pricing.
