The Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) is a legal requirement for anyone in a role that will offer the service of alcohol. When complete, individuals receive an ID card which they must have on them whenever they're working.

Find out what courses are available, potential career opportunities and how long it takes to get your RSA with our guide.

Who should take an online RSA course?

Anyone who intends to work with a business that sells or promotes alcohol must have a RSA. Bartenders, security, waiters/waitresses and liquor shop staff all fall under this category. Each state requires its own RSA completion as liquor laws may vary.

RSA certificates expire after five years. This means that you'll have to renew your certificate before it expires by completing a refresher course.

Fines apply to both individuals and businesses if a member of staff is caught on shift without their RSA card.

What topics are covered in an RSA course online?

An RSA course covers a wide range of topics including:

  • State liquor laws
  • Customer identification checks
  • Harm minimisation strategies
  • Standard drink limits
  • How to identify an individual who has had too much to drink
  • How and when to refuse service to intoxicated individuals
  • How to handle an individual who becomes agitated at refused service
  • How to help individuals who are intoxicated - from providing water to organising transportation

How long does an online RSA course take to complete?

An RSA takes 6-8 hours to complete, depending on whether you take breaks. The good news is that you can receive your RSA the very day you complete the course.

This is given as an interim certificate which is valid for a short period of time while your official identification card is sent to you.

What are the career opportunities after taking an RSA course?

Having a RSA qualification on your resume for any of these jobs may increase your chances of being successful.

  • Barstaff
  • Waitstaff
  • Security detail
  • Liquor shop attendant

What equipment will I need?

For a smooth run, have a stable Internet connection, a computer or laptop, an email address and speakers for video prompts.

All your study materials will be provided to you via the RSA course provider. You may be asked to present photo identification prior to starting the course.
