Which has lower fees?

Ria

Fees vary by money transfer method, amount and destination for Ria, which can make it hard to predict ahead of time. Sometimes it will increase as you send more, other times it might decrease. Sometimes the same amount can cost $1.50 from one location and $15 from another.

WorldFirst

WorldFirst charges no transfer fees, but instead takes a margin on exchange rates. However, it has a minimum transfer of $2,000.

Winner: WorldFirst

WorldFirst doesn't charge any fees. That's hard to beat.

Let's crunch the numbers: Sending $2,000 to Canada

The table below shows how much it would cost to send money to Canada. We've included the fees and exchange rates, so you can see how much of a difference comparing options can make to the amount of money that arrives at the end.

Sending $2,000 to Canada
Ria WorldFirst
Transfer fee $15 $0
Exchange rate 1 AUD = 0.898 CAD 1 AUD = 0.9365 CAD
Transfer speed Up to 4 days Up to 4 days
Total Canadian dollars received CAD$1,782.50 CAD$1,873
Receiver gets CAD$90.50 less CAD$90.50 more

When sending $2,000 in these circumstances, you'd get over CAD$90 more with WorldFirst than with Ria, thanks to its absence of fees and more favourable exchange rates. However, keep in mind that you can't transfer less than $2,000 with WorldFirst.

Which offers better exchange rates?

Ria

Ria's exchange rates vary depending on the currencies being transferred, but are often 1–3% above the mid-market rate.

Here's an example of AUD to NZD:

  • If the mid-market rate is 1 AUD = 1.04073 NZD
  • Ria's exchange rate might be 1 AUD = 1.015 NZD

WorldFirst

WorldFirst's exchange rates tend to fall just under 1% above the mid-market rate.

Here's the same example of AUD to NZD:

  • If the mid-market rate is 1 AUD = 1.04073 NZD
  • WorldFirst's exchange rate might be 1 AUD = 1.0347 NZD

Winner: WorldFirst

WorldFirst will often add a smaller margin to the exchange rate than Ria, meaning you'll get more from your transfer. This varies by currency, though.

If you do go with Ria, keep an eye out for the exchange rate on GBP or CAD transfers, which attract a bigger margin.

Which is faster?

Ria

Though you can't transfer money instantly, Ria comes close with a minimum transfer time of 15 minutes. This is only for transfers you pay for by debit or credit card, or for cash pick-ups. But depending on your delivery option, you could also wait up to four business days with Ria.

WorldFirst

WorldFirst offers a same-day option, but transfers can take up to four business days for your funds to fully clear.

Winner: Ria

Ria can offer faster transfers, albeit at extra cost.

Ria

Ria lets you send money online or from a branch, if you want to pay by cash. You'll have to create an account if transferring online, but won't need to if you're going into a store.

WorldFirst

WorldFirst only offers online transfers. You'll need to create an account, indicate who you're sending your money to, how much you're sending and how you'd like your recipient to receive it. After creating an account, you enter your and your recipient's details before finalising the transaction.

Bottom line

WorldFirst imposes a high minimum compared with Ria, but not nearly as many currencies. While the rates and fees are often better at WorldFirst, it may not offer the currency you're after.

Before you jump on either website to make your transfer, compare your options against your needs. You might find a better fit.
