Regulation needed to pressure builders

National Shelter chief executive Adrian Pisarski has called for regulation to ensure basic standards of universal design to make new housing accessible to the elderly and people with disabilities, Sourceable has reported. Pisarski’s comments come after the release of a paper by National Shelter and Griffith University that found the housing industry is expected to fall well short of a goal to implement a universal design standard by 2020. The paper found the industry is expected to meet less than 5% of its goal, Soureceable reported.

“I’m of the view now that we really need to regulate and create that pressure from the system that means people have to put these things in and make them standard products,” PIsarski said.

Pisarski argued that disinterest from private builders was to blame for the housing industry falling behind on its 2020 goal. He said a lack of regulation meant there was little to pressure builders into achieving minimum standards.

“I think people want to do the right thing, but without that pressure from the regulatory system telling them that they have to they seem to find reasons not to deliver this,” he told Sourceable.
