Saddle up, partner

For a long time, Rockstar Games was no more (or less) than the studio responsible for Grand Theft Auto. That one franchise defined Rockstar in the same way that Call of Duty now defines Activision. But then 2010 rolled around and brought with it Red Dead Redemption, and suddenly Rockstar had created a whole new identity for itself, one built on single-shot revolvers and wide-brimmed hats instead of lowriders and Glock 9s.

Now, Rockstar is finally delivering the follow-up fans have been begging the studio to make for eight long years. Red Dead Redemption 2 has some big spurred boots to fill, but as Rockstar has proved in the past, it's capable of one-upping even its most popular titles – just look at the ridiculous success of GTA Online for proof of that.

As a prequel to the first game, Red Dead Redemption 2 follows a new outlaw named Arthur Morgan, a member of the Dutch van der Linde gang that John Marston fled from in the original Red Dead Redemption. Along with the kind of mature narrative Rockstar is known for, the game places a greater emphasis on online multiplayer this time around, with lessons learned from GTA Online influencing the structure of the western playground.
