Real Travel Insurance FAQ

Q. Will the policy cover medical expenses for travel within Australia?

  • A. Real Travel Insurance policies are not permitted by law to cover medical costs incurred within Australia. If you become sick or injured while travelling in Australia, you’ll be covered for expenses under Medicare and/or your private health insurance.

Q. What if my pre-existing medical condition isn’t covered?

  • A. If you have a condition that doesn’t meet the policy requirements for automatic cover, Real Insurance won’t cover your condition under any of its travel insurance policies. This applies to you and your travelling companions covered by the terms of the policy.

Q. Can I extend my policy?

  • A. Extending your policy is possible, but the conditions depend on the policy. For the Basic and Comprehensive options, contact the insurer at least two days before the policy is due to expire. Policies can only be extended once and for a maximum of 12 months.

Q. Who can apply for this insurance?

  • A. These policies are available to Australian residents aged 79 years and under (75 years and under for the Annual policy). Policies must be bought before you leave on your journey.

Q. When do I receive my policy?

  • A. Your policy will be emailed to you as soon as you purchase it, which means you can purchase a policy last-minute. Documents can also be posted to you.

Q. Who underwrites Real Travel Insurance?

  • A. Real travel insurance policies are underwritten by the Hollard Insurance Company.

Q. Can I cancel my Real Travel insurance policy if I’m not happy with it?

  • A. You have a cooling-off period of 14 days to change your mind about purchasing the policy. As long as you haven’t left on your trip or filed a claim, you will receive a full refund.
