History

Sir Leslie Joseph Hooker opened his real estate business in Sydney’s eastern suburb of Maroubra in 1928. Hooker had been orphaned at the age of eight, but was able to save enough to buy his first property by the age of 16. Hooker pioneered a number of real estate trends in Australia, including introducing Australia to real estate investment trusts in 1959, franchise offices in 1960 and the large format retail shopping mall in the 1960s.

Born of Chinese heritage, Hooker kept his ancestry a secret throughout his life. He was knighted in 1973, having devoted much of his time to philanthropic efforts.

In 2009, the company was purchased by a consortium of private investors, led by Hooker’s grandson, L. Janusz Hooker.
