RACQ sees a 7% increase in crashes involving animals
June, July and August are the highest risk months for Queensland drivers hitting animals.
Over the past three years, RACQ has received more than 10,000 animal collision insurance claims, said RACQ spokesperson Kirsty Clinton. Worse still is that collisions with animals are on the increase.
“RACQ has seen a 7% increase from 2016-2017 in crashes involving animals, and it’s raised serious concerns for drivers,” she said.
This significant increase tallies with a study of insurance claims conducted by Western Australia’s RAC.
Peak Queensland animal collision months
The three winter months of July, August and June were the most common periods to make contact with a creature, with over 1,000 incidents per month on average. September also had a high level of collisions between cars and animals. Claims slowly tail off in May, October, April, November and December. January, March and February have the fewest claims with less than 750.
RACQ pleading with drivers
Clinton went on to beg drivers to be on high alert for animals during winter.
“Our data shows the cooler months are a peak time for these types of crashes, so as we head into winter we’re pleading with motorists to be on high alert,” said Clinton.
According to RACQ research, 30% of those surveyed had crashed into an animal when driving. In most cases, motorists remembered that the animal jumped or flew suddenly into their path.
“If you’re driving in an area where animals could be present, slow down and take note of any signage about local wildlife,” she said.
If possible, drivers should avoid travelling at high-risk times like early morning or late evening.
“Avoid driving at dawn and dusk when animals are out foraging. With less green grass available in winter time, animals are often seen on the roadside looking for food,” Clinton added.
