How to use a RAT kit

If you're unsure or need a refresher as to how RAT kits work, NSW Health has produced this helpful video. Just remember, instructions vary from brand to brand.

Queensland and Brisbane RAT rules

The current advice from Queensland Health is to get tested if you have any COVID-19 symptoms, or if you are a close contact of a confirmed case. Close contacts need to isolate for 7 days, and do another RAT or PCR test on day 6 of the quarantine period.

If you test positive on a RAT, you must report your positive test using this form, and isolate for 7 days. If after 7 days you are not symptomatic, or are only very mildly symptomatic, you can leave isolation. If you still have moderate to serious COVID-19 symptoms, you must wait until those symptoms have gone before you can leave isolation.

Queensland and Brisbane free RATs

Certain Queensland residents are eligible for free RATs. To qualify for this scheme, you must hold 1 of the following concession cards:

  • Commonwealth Seniors Health Card
  • Health Care Card
  • Low Income Health Care Card
  • Pensioner Concession Card
  • Department of Veterans' Affairs Gold, White or Orange card.

As a part of this scheme, eligible Queenslanders can collect a maximum of 5 tests in 1 month and 10 tests in 3 months from participating community pharmacies.

Where to buy masks in Queensland

Rising COVID cases have already seen masks receive an increased emphasis. The state government has opened the door for schools to introduce mask mandates, with certain private schools already asking students to wear them. So far the government has resisted introducing state-wide mask rules, but it's possible that will change.

Either way, they are an easy way to help mitigate the spread of COVID. Check out your options for buying masks online in Queensland and Brisbane.
