Qantas vs Velocity: Which offers better fuel rewards?

Which frequent flyer program offers you the most points when filling up your car at the petrol station?

Qantas and Velocity are Australia’s largest frequent flyer programs. As well as flying with the airline or using a frequent flyer credit card, you could earn frequent flyer points with your preferred airline when you fill up at the petrol station.

The verdict

While the Qantas Frequent Flyer program initially had a competitive program for earning points at the petrol pump, the changes with Woolworths means that Qantas customers can no longer earn points on fuel purchases.

However, even before the Qantas and Woolworths’ alliance changed, Velocity had the upper hand when it came to petrol points. Not only can you earn Velocity Frequent Flyer points at more locations, you can earn them directly by swiping your card at the checkout. On the other hand, Qantas Frequent Flyer customers had to join the Everyday Rewards program and opt to earn Qantas points to start collecting points for petrol.

Velocity is the winner for now but if Qantas and Caltex join forces they could face some competition in the new year.

Compare Qantas and Velocity fuel rewards

Velocity Frequent Flyers can earn rewards points on fuel when they fill up with BP service stations. If you're not yet a member, you can learn how to sign up and join the Velocity Frequent Flyer Program for free here.

How do I earn points?

All you have to do is swipe your Velocity membership card at the counter before you pay. You earn 2 Velocity Frequent Flyer Points for every litre of fuel purchased up to 150 litres of fuel, and 2 Velocity Points for every dollar spent in-store up to $100.

Are there any restrictions?

You can’t earn Velocity points on tobacco, lottery tickets, prepaid mobile phone cards and gift cards when shopping at BP service stations. The capped earning of up to 150 litres or $100 at BP could also restrict your potential to collect points.

Where can I earn points?

Velocity frequent flyers can earn points any time they fill up or make an in-store purchase at any participating BP service station in Australia.

Velocity Frequent Flyers can earn points at over 1,400 BP stations around Australia.

Qantas Frequent Flyers who belonged to the Woolworths Rewards program could previously earn Qantas points at over 1,800 Caltex gas stations in Australia. However, cardholders can no longer earn points at any of the 630 Caltex-Woolworths outlets as of December 31 2015.

How do I earn points?

Previously, Qantas Frequent Flyers had to join the Woolworths Everyday Rewards program to earn fuel points. They were required to link the two programs and opt to earn two Qantas points per litre instead of a four cent per litre discount when they filled up and swiped their card at Caltex-Woolworths stations. Similar to Velocity, there was also a cap of 150 litres of fuel per transaction.

Are there any restrictions?

As the Everyday Rewards program has been replaced by the Woolworths Rewards program, Qantas Frequent Flyers won’t be able to earn points at Caltex-Woolworths petrol stations after 31 December 2015. While there are whispers that Qantas and Caltex might partner to allow Frequent Flyers to earn points on petrol, neither of the two have given any more information about when and how this will be happening in the new year. So for now, Qantas Frequent Flyers will be unable to earn points as they fill up come 2016.

Where can I earn points?

When the Woolworths Everyday Rewards program was still in place, you could earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points when you linked the two programs and swiped your Woolies rewards card at the gas station - unfortunately no longer the case.
