Qantas vs Velocity: Which offers better fuel rewards?

Which frequent flyer program offers you the most points when filling up at the petrol station?

Qantas and Velocity are Australia’s largest frequent flyer programs. As well as flying with the airline or using a frequent flyer credit card, you could earn frequent flyer points with your preferred airline when you fill up at the petrol station.

The verdict

While the Qantas Frequent Flyer program initially had a competitive offer with Caltex for earning points at the petrol pump thanks to the ability to earn Woolworths Rewards which they could then exchange for Qantas Points. However, following the news that BP is buying out Woolworths petrol stations in 2017, Qantas customers are awaiting a new partnership to be rewarded at the pump. Woolworths' strategic partnership with BP is expected to commence no earlier than 1 January 2018. In the mean time, Qantas Frequent Flyers will be able to earn points at Caltex if they belong to the Qantas Business Rewards program and use the Caltex StarCard to pay for fuel.

However, even before the Woolworths alliance changed, Velocity had the upper hand when it came to petrol points. Not only can you earn Velocity Frequent Flyer points at more locations, you can earn them directly by swiping your card at the checkout. On the other hand, Qantas Frequent Flyer customers had to join the Woolworths Rewards program and opt to earn Qantas points to start collecting points for petrol.

Velocity is the winner for now but when Qantas and BP join forces they could face some competition in the new year.

How do I earn points?

All you have to do is swipe your Velocity membership card at the counter before you pay. You earn 2 Velocity Frequent Flyer Points for every litre of fuel purchased up to 150 litres of fuel, and 2 Velocity Points for every dollar spent in-store up to $100.

Are there any restrictions?

You can’t earn Velocity points on tobacco, lottery tickets, prepaid mobile phone cards and gift cards when shopping at BP service stations. The capped earning of up to 150 litres or $100 at BP could also restrict your potential to collect points.

Where can I earn points?

Velocity frequent flyers can earn points any time they fill up or make an in-store purchase at any participating BP service station in Australia.

Velocity Frequent Flyers can earn points at over 1,400 BP stations around Australia.

QFF-logo250x73Qantas Frequent Flyers who belonged to the Woolworths Rewards program could previously earn Qantas points at Woolworths-Caltex branded petrol stations in Australia.

How do I earn points?

Previously, Qantas Frequent Flyers had to join the Woolworths Rewards program to earn fuel points. They were required to link the two programs and opt to earn two Qantas points per litre instead of a four cent per litre discount when they filled up and swiped their card at Caltex-Woolworths stations. Similar to Velocity, there was also a cap of 150 litres of fuel per transaction. With the new Woolworths, BP partnership announced we assume the structure will be similar, however, until the full details are released Qantas Frequent Flyers will have to wait to find out.

As mentioned earlier, if your business belongs to the Qantas Business Rewards, you can still earn Qantas Points on petrol with a Caltex StarCard. You’ll collect 1 Qantas Point per 1 litre of Vortex Premium fuels and per 2 litres of regular petrol and diesel. You can also pick up 1 Qantas Point per $1 spent on eligible products in-store and per $1 spent on services, repairs and parts. If you get the Caltex StarCard, you won't have to pay the usual Qantas Business Rewards program fee of $89.50.

Are there any restrictions?

As the details of the new partnership with BP have not been announced, we will have to wait to see what the restrictions will be.

Where can I earn points?

When the Woolworths Rewards program and Caltex alliance was still in place, you could earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points when you linked the two programs and swiped your Woolies rewards card at the petrol station. A Woolworths Group media release has indicated that Woolworths Rewards Members will be able to earn Rewards Points on both fuel and in-store purchases, and be able to redeem Rewards Points on purchases across BP branded sites.
