Review of the Qantas Premier Platinum Mastercard

Offered by Qantas and issued by Citi, the Qantas Premier Platinum Mastercard has a tiered earn rate to help maximise rewards for frequent flyers. With this card, you earn 2 points per $1 spent on Qantas fares, Qantas Club membership and purchases made on the Qantas Store. You also earn 1.5 points per $1 on international spending. For eligible purchases in Australia, you earn 1 Qantas Point per $1 spent, up to $10,000 per month and 0.5 points per $1 after that.

While there are other frequent flyer cards that also offer complimentary lounge invitations and travel insurance, the Qantas Premier Platinum Mastercard has set itself apart with another feature – up to 20% off selected domestic companion fares once a year when you book through the Qantas Premier Concierge. But take note of the standard annual fee of $299 (reduced to $149 p.a. in the first year) and purchase rate of 19.99% p.a. (variable) to decide if these benefits will outweigh the costs of this card.

  • 0% p.a. for 6 months on your first Qantas purchase. If you use your card for a purchase with Qantas in the first 6 months of card approval, it will automatically convert to a 0% p.a. interest rate for 6 months from the date the transaction is processed. Any unpaid balance at the end of the six-month period will revert to the variable purchase rate currently 19.99% p.a. This offer is only available for the following Qantas purchases: flights booked directly through qantas.com and Qantas Contact Centres; Qantas flights booked through selected travel agents; Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club membership, joining and annual fees; Qantas Gift Vouchers; purchases from qantasstore.com.au and qantasepiqure.com.au. What does “eligible purchases” cover?

    • Default Gravatar
      JonathanJuly 25, 2017

      Hi Garry,

The definition of eligible purchases is located at Qantas Premier Card Rewards Terms and Conditions page 4 of 12 PDF. It states that:

” Eligible Transaction means any purchase excluding (but not limited to) Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, BPAY payments, purchases of foreign currency and travellers cheques, transactions made in operating a business, payments to other Citi accounts, bank fees and charges such as interest and ATM charges, transactions made using Qantas Points and government related transactions. Government related transactions include transactions with government or semi-government entities, or relating to services provided by or in connection with government (for example but not limited to transactions made at Australia Post, payments to the Australian Taxation Office, council rates, motor registries, tolls, parking
stations and meters, fares on public transport, fines and court related costs).”

Please take note that this is determined based on the declared information by the merchant where you have used your card, such as any information based on the type of business they operate. So it is important to ask or confirm with the merchants before making a transaction.

      Hope this helps.

      Cheers,
      Jonathan

Can you top up the card with funds to exceed your limit? For example you have a $20,000 credit limit and you want to pay a $25,000 bill, can you throw an extra $5000 on it? Will this incur any extra fees etc?
