Qantas expands its global reach with the launch of Qantas Cash New Zealand. We compare the Aussie and NZ model to see which comes out on top.

Kiwi Qantas Frequent Flyers can now shop and earn points overseas with ease thanks to the launch of Qantas Cash in New Zealand. Available from October 2015, the New Zealand Qantas Cash prepaid card offers similar benefits to its Australian equivalent, although with some differences.

The first country outside of Australia to access Qantas Cash, New Zealand is home to Qantas Frequent Flyer’s second-largest membership base.

"We know New Zealanders love to travel and we want to give them more choice with products like this to support those experiences," said Qantas Loyalty CEO Lesley Grant.

We take a look at what the new Qantas Cash card has to offer and how it weighs up against its big brother from across the pond.

What features are on offer?

Currencies

New Zealand

NZ cardholders can load up to eight different foreign currencies onto the Qantas Cash card. The currencies on offer include:

  • AUD
  • USD
  • EUR
  • GBP
  • JPY
  • CAD
  • HKD
  • SGD
  • NZD

Australia

On the other hand, the Australian Qantas Cash card offers 10 foreign currencies (plus Australian dollars). Aussie Qantas Cash cardholders can use:

  • AUD

  • GBP
  • EUR
  • THB
  • NZD
  • SGD
  • HKD
  • CAD
  • JPY

The Australian card offers cardholders greater flexibility and choice of foreign currencies, so it comes out on top in this category. learn more about Qantas Cash here.

Although both are low-fee cards, the Australian alternative has the benefit of no currency conversion fees when making a purchase that isn’t loaded or available on the card.

Points

Both the Australian and New Zealand counterparts can help cardholders earn points as they shop both at home and overseas. See how the points earn rates stack up below.

New Zealand

  • Earn one Qantas point for every $1 eligible spend overseas
  • Earn one Qantas Points for every $2 spent in NZD

Australia

  • Earn one Qantas point for every $1 spend on eligible purchases overseas
  • Earn one Qantas Points for every $2 spent on eligible purchases in AUD

As you can see, the rewards perks are dead-equal regardless of which side of the Tasman you call home.

Managing your card

  • Loading funds

Similar to the standard process, New Zealand cardholders can load NZD onto their card before transferring it into their preferred foreign currency.

These funds are then locked into the current exchange rate to protect cardholders from rate fluctuations as they travel, so you’ll know exactly how much money you have as you travel.

Both Australian and Kiwi cardholders can load funds onto their card via the relevant Qantas Cash website or from their online bank accounts. Australians can use either BPAY or bank transfer to load cash onto their card, whereas New Zealanders can only load their cards through a bank transfer.

  • Online account

Both Australian and New Zealand cardholders can manage their accounts on-the-go with the Qantas Cash online account, where you can load money, move money between supported currencies, transfer money to other Qantas Cash cardholders as well as monitor your balance, transaction history and points.

Although Australia comes out on top in the load and reload department, they’re relatively equal when it comes to account management.

The verdict

The two Qantas Cash cards offer Qantas Frequent Flyers a convenient way to access multiple currencies while earning points on purchases when shopping overseas. Both of the cards offer low fees and allow cardholders to lock in exchange rates at the time of loading to avoid the consequence of negative fluctuations.

As the Australian card offers more supported currencies, more loading options and no currency conversion fee, it’s safe to say that it’s the one that offers greater bang for your buck. Both cards are only available to permanent residents.

There is hope though. Considering the Qantas Cash card only just launched in New Zealand, it’s likely that it will eventually catch up to the Aussie equivalent over time.

Both of the Qantas Cash cards offer cardholders a convenient way to access their cash while racking up Frequent Flyer points as they travel. But this isn’t the only frequent flyer travel card on the market, so make sure to compare your options to find the right card for you.
