Qantas and Air New Zealand to codeshare: all the details

Posted: 1 June 2018 10:55 am

You can now get 115 new codeshare flights and lounge access with the trans-Tasman rivals.

Qantas and Air New Zealand have struck a deal to offer codeshares on domestic services in Australia and New Zealand.

Under the new deal, codeshares will be offered on up to 85 routes in Australia on Qantas and up to 30 on Air New Zealand. The airlines will also coordinate their schedules to reduce transfer times.

Codeshare tickets will go on sale at the end of July 2018, with services commencing on 28 October 2018.

The change comes just two months after Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia announced they were ending their alliance, with codeshares and lounge access to cease from October.

That shift left Air New Zealand without a partner to transfer its customers to for domestic flights in Australia. Qantas now fills that gap.

While Qantas and Air New Zealand will codeshare domestic flights, they won't run codeshares on trans-Tasman flights between Australia and New Zealand.

"A codeshare deal on our domestic networks makes sense for customers because it leverages the strengths we each have in our home markets," Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said.

What happens for Qantas Frequent Flyers?

Gold, Platinum or Platinum One frequent flyers will be able to access Air New Zealand lounges when booked on codeshare Air New Zealand flights.

It's not yet clear how Qantas passengers will earn points on codeshare flights. "We are working through these details and will have them finalised before the codeshare flights begin on 28 October 2018," a Qantas spokesperson told Points Finder.

Based on Qantas's existing codeshare arrangements with airlines like British Airways, points offered are likely to be less generous than on Qantas's own services.

Nonetheless, the shift is good news for Qantas customers, who can now access a full-service airline rather than going with Jetstar. For Virgin, one possible way of increasing its New Zealand presence might be launching Tigerair.

Which routes will get the codeshare?

Maps issued by Qantas suggest that codeshares will be available to every destination served domestically by the two airlines. Here are the routes covered in New Zealand for Qantas passengers:

And here's where Air New Zealand customers will be covered in Australia:

Competition on trans-Tasman services is heating up. Both Air New Zealand and Virgin have announced plans to increase their services.

This is good news for both airlines, with passengers getting access to a total network of 36 lounges. While points arrangements aren't yet clear, earning some points on Air New Zealand beats earning none!
