- Might be too advanced for some users
- Expensive (sans discount)
Private Internet Access (PIA) is a Denver-based, open source VPN provider owned by Kape Technologies. It goes the extra mile when it comes to online privacy. You're buying into multi-layered security with IP cloaking and VPN tunnelling. And this is all happening at a TCP/IP interface level, too. In layman's terms: every online-enabled program on your computer device will become eavesdrop-proof, not just your web browser. Let's take a look at the included features and performance.
- Servers in 46 countries
- Unlimited bandwidth
- High grade encryption
- 10 simultaneous connections
- Easy to set up
- Lots of security options
- Strong customer support
- A security-packed VPN for serious users
Private Internet Access is a feature-rich VPN with an impressive amount of security beneath the hood. It provides unlimited bandwidth, DNS and DNS leak protection, a connection kill switch, a 'no logging' policy and access to servers in over 40 countries. While a little pricier than the average VPN you should be able to get it at a discount by shopping at the right time. Highly recommended.
Pricing and availability
PriceFrom $4.64 per month
Where to buy
PIA's normal monthly service pricing is much higher than average at $16.35 per month. That's a lot to pay for a single VPN licence (especially if you only need it for a single purpose like watching US Netflix.) Fortunately, PIA regularly runs sales on its website with discounts of up to 70%. You can currently get a 12-month subscription for $4.64 per month, for example.
As with most VPN plans, you'd have to be pretty foolish and/or unlucky to be paying full price. If you don't see a deal on its website, our advice is to wait a few weeks as another is bound to appear in quick order.
Curiously, PIA does not currently offer a month-to-month or multi-year plan in Australia. Instead you're limited to a 12-month contract. (There is a 7-day money-back guarantee, however.) If you require multiple licenses you can also bulk purchase VPN accounts for a slight discount.
Quite a wide array of payment options are available, from Paypal to Amazon Pay, Bitcoin and a large collection of cryptocurrencies. (You can also do it the old fashioned way with your choice of five major credit cards.)
