Pokkén Tournament Australian price comparison Wii U

super smash (31)

In an unlikely union, mighty fighting series Tekken and legendary RPG series Pokémon get cute yet brutal in a colourful battle arena.

Other than the fact that both games involve one on one duels, there is little in common between Tekken and Pokémon. The former, by developer Namco Bandai, is a 3D arena fighter known for its tight, deep and strategy-oriented combat with a cast of lifelike heroes and villains. Nintendo’s Pokémon series, however, is a turn-based RPG where you explore the land, capture the titular creatures, train them up and use their skills wisely in battle to defeat other teams.

Here, however, the two combine. Tekken takes the lead from a gameplay perspective, under the guidance of a legendary pioneer in the fighting genre, Katsuhiro Harada. While Pokémon provides the theme and characters, with the famous critters taking on the role of combatants in place of the usual human (or near-human) heavyweights. The gameplay scales back the technical elements of the fighting engine used in Tekken, to ensure it remains accessible to the wide Pokémon fan base. However, the gameplay remains fun and frantic.

Pokkén Tournament serves fans well, smartly implementing features from the Pokémon series into the Tekken fighting engine. Special moves are based on the attacks from each individual creature, and Mega Evolutions can also be unleashed once the Resonance Gauge has been filled up by successfully landing attacks. Support Pokémon can be called in mid-fight to add their buffs to a fighter’s attack and defence, too. The core game offers one vs one combat, which is ideally played with a friend on the same couch, however, “friendly” and “ranked” battles can also be played online.

Much like Hyrule Warriors Legends (3DS) and Miitomo (Mobiles), this is yet another example of Nintendo successfully broadening its strategy with game development and such smartly implemented spin-offs are more than welcome.
