Either way, you might be wondering how to protect yourself from malicious viruses and software, like trojans and adware, that can potentially cost you money and more importantly, your security. The number of internet-connected devices per household is growing, and without sufficient protection, are devices and private data are more vulnerable than ever.

Antivirus software usually does a number of jobs, but primarily they are tasked with preventing malicious attacks and detection and removal of threats. Usually, a higher price tag means more features but this isn’t always the case.

AVS (8)
  • Top results from AV lab tests for protection
  • Cheaper than AVG and covers more devices
  • Mobile coverage at no additional cost
  • Doesn't offer all that much in the way of iOS
  • Large price jump for multiple device coverage
  • This low-tier plan offers an abundance of features and some powerful antivirus software for all your devices.
AVS (9)
  • Top results for protection on AV lab tests.
  • Scans your social networks and analyses privacy settings
  • Ransomware protection
  • Massive price jump for mobile device coverage ($79.95) and 24/7 live support/remote access ($149.95).
  • Trend Micro has some innovative features, like scanning social network privacy settings that anyone could benefit from. Their website is also pristine. Fantastic for new customers who don't know what they're looking for but it does suffer from maybe one too many options and a spike in cost for mobile device coverage and comprehensive tech support.
AVS (3)
  • An abundance of features
  • Some of which, like antiphishing and file shredding, not usually found in antivirus plans.
  • ...the abundance of features may overwhelm beginners
  • We had a pretty unhelpful experience with Live Chat.
  • Though McAfee's most popular plan offers a lot of bang for you buck - some of the advanced features may overwhelm or even be unnecessary for the average customer
AVS (5)
  • Top results from AV lab tests for protection
  • Free version offers plenty of features for the average computer owner
  • Tried and trusted brand.
  • Occasionally identifies harmless programs as malicious
  • The revered AVG offers premium anti-virus software at a reasonable price and even some substantial free versions. It's issues with recognising legitimate programs as malicious are nearly too infrequent to worry about.
AVS (7)
  • Top results from AV lab tests for performance
  • The $59.99 package includes anti-phishing
  • AV Lab tests returned 0 cases of false detections.
  • Not the most user-friendly. Some great features are hidden away.
  • Kaspersky's antivirus software offers near-infallible virus detection and some neat added features not offered by its rivals though its interface and sometimes complicated menus may frustrate newcomers.
AVS (2)
  • Top results for protections on AV lab tests
  • Stylish, stripped back interface is very friendly and accessible
  • For those who are just looking for antivirus software without all the extras...
  • ..but if you're looking for a little bit more (like antiphishing) you're out of luck.
  • Expensive for what's included.
  • Though Panda may not be a household name in antivirus software, its AV-test results show that if offers security that is equal, and in some cases superior, to its more well-known predecessors.
  • Performs well and gets the job done quickly
  • Variety of support options.

  • Expensive for a 1 PC deal
  • No AV lab test review
  • StopZILLA has a cute name, a smooth intuitive interface (reminiscent of Windows or Xbox and does its job quickly. However, it's a little pricey and some if its advanced features don't do as good a job as cheaper (sometimes free) options.
  • Priced appropriately
  • 24/7 tech support over the phone
  • Falls behind on AV lab tests for performance and usability
  • Standard plan doesn't include coverage for mobile.
  • Falling just behind the big 4 (AVG, Norton,  McAfee and Kaspersky) in performance and usability, Avast offers a suitably priced product for casual, entry-level users.
AVS (6)
  • Top results from AV lab tests for protection and usability
  • User-friendly interface that mimics Windows' tiles
  • The free version is so good that the jump to paid seems unnecessary
  • A little pricey compared to the competition
  • Though Panda may not be a household name in antivirus software, its AV-test results show that if offers security that is equal, and in some cases superior, to its more well-known predecessors.
AVS (4)
  • Top results for usability on AV lab tests
  • Similar social networking tools to Trend Micro
  • Extra features great for those who want something a little more advanced
  • Scores poorly on AV test for performance but many users report this is not the case
  • Those looking for a little more value in their antivirus software will love NOD 32's advanced features - though these same features may be all but useless to the layman. Despite the poor scores given by AV lab tests, many users swear by Eset NOD 32's performance. Good thing there's a free 30-day trial!

The difference between Antivirus and Anti-Malware

Though "antivirus" is the more commonly used term, a virus is actually a specific type of malware. Malware is an umbrella term to describe the different kinds of damaging code, and a virus is malware that is created to duplicate itself and spread as far as it can - hence the name, virus. There are other kinds of malware, for example, trojan, worms, spyware, and adware.
