Disney Plus, Prime Video and Stan gain on Paramount Plus: TV Charts
Finder's Australian Streaming TV Charts for September 2023 have been released. What is the best app this month?
Paramount Plus has made it a 9-month winning streak today as Finder released the Australian Streaming TV Charts for September 2023. But the real action happened back in the pack, where some big players made some significant gains.
The Australian Streaming TV Charts uses Finder's exclusive access to Parrot's relative popularity of the top 100 TV shows in Australia in a given month, then determines which apps those shows are available on. Finder's algorithm them takes into account recency of each show, the number of available episodes and ultimately the price to deduce a value score.
Paramount Plus scored 85 through the August data collection period to take top spot. That's a slight increase of 6% on the previous month, but still well down from its peak at 110.
Disney Plus, Stan and Amazon Prime rise
Paramount Plus has had it all its own way in recent months, but through August many of its competitors had strong returns to form.
Stan (49%), Disney Plus (23%) and Prime Video (19%) all went north in a hurry. Apple TV Plus continued to set new personal bests, rising yet again by 4% to a value score of 28. A second season of The Afterparty was its latest entry into the top 100 TV shows.But back to Stan, as it's a huge result for the app after months of struggles. Its value score of 23 is its best in almost 12 months. A new season of Billions and the debut of Twisted Metal sure helped. But there was plenty of love for The Walking Dead: Dead City, Yellowstone and Doctor Who, too.
For Prime Video, there was a strong debut for The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart and love for a second season of The Summer I Turned Pretty. But the big winner was a second season of Good Omens, which stormed to the number 1 spot in Australia as the country's most in-demand show. It was enough to drag the platform to second spot and a value score of 64.
Also having its best month in a long time was Disney Plus, climbing to third spot with a value score of 59. The app also managed to pass Paramount Plus on market share of the top 100 most in-demand TV shows for the first time in 7 months.
BINGE bust and Foxtel fail
It was a mixed result for Foxtel Now and its sister product BINGE. They took home first and second respectively when we looked at the relative market share of the top 100 most in-demand shows. Yet both saw heavy falls, as Foxtel Now fell 15% and BINGE 13%. It's hardly a surprise, given the only new debut of note for them in August was a fresh season of And Just Like That… which only just squeezed into the top 100.
ABC iView and 10 play win big
Over on the free apps, it was a return to top spot for ABC iView, with a debut for Bay of Fires the notable addition catching consumers' eyes. Ultimately the value score of 83 in August makes it one of the app's better performing months.
But it was 10 play that was the biggest mover, with growth of 134% in its value score. MasterChef and Hunted did well for the service, and there was support from the new hidden cam prank series The Inspired Unemployed (Impractical) Jokers.
7 Plus was saved by The Voice, and managed a second-place finish. But 9Now dived 69%, suffering from a lack of recent seasons of popular shows, despite having some legacy titles that are still holding firm in the top 100.
