Overwatch Winter Wonderland 2017 details announced
Overwatch's Christmas event Winter Wonderland is back and we have all the details.
The Overwatch seasonal event Winter Wonderland is returning this year on Wednesday, 13 December AEDT/NZDT and will be available across all platforms. This event is only run for a limited time during the Christmas holidays and offers some exclusive content during this time. Most importantly this event is free and offers all the new content for free to play (excluding the items available during the time).
Check out the Developer Update below with the legend himself Jeff Kaplan.
The long-awaited Punk Hanzo skin has been confirmed for this season, along with some legendary skins for Junkrat and Roadhog. Game Director Jeff Kaplan has confirmed that these will be unlocked by loot boxes and more will be available on the day. As with previous timed events, it's expected that there will be special Winter Loot Boxes during the event, which will contain at least one item from the Winter Wonderland collection when opened. This can be either a profile icon, spray, poses, emotes, skins or highlight intros.
During this period players will also be able to use the gold currency in the Hero Gallery to unlock items from this and the previous year’s Winter Wonderland collection. Items from the previous year will be discounted and cheaper than the new items, similar to this year’s Halloween event which also features the previous Halloween themed collections at a discounted rate.
The seasonal map themes have returned to Hanamura and Kings Row again this year, this is along with Black Forest getting a season theme this Christmas. These limited time decorated maps are always just beautiful and Kaplan described this as "one of the most gorgeous jobs [Blizzard's] environmental artists have ever done" so we are in for something special this year.
The Holiday Mode
This year an all-new mode is being added alongside Mei’s Snowball Offensive mode from last year. Mei’s Snowball Offensive is moving to 6v6 on The Black Forest, where it has been changed to single elimination mode. Once you are hit by an enemy player's snowball you are out for the entire round. This is similar to the lockout elimination mode in the arcade.
The new mode this year is called Yeti Hunt. Yeti Hunt once again features Mei, the only snow themed character in Overwatch, taking on a boss themed Winston in his Yeti skin. A team of Mei’s must take down this Yeti, who is controlled by another player, as a team.
The Yeti must find meat to unlock his Primal Rage to take down the enemy Mei’s and win the match. The Mei’s must take out the Yeti as a team or face the beast’s rage. This mode is meant to be fun and silly, not something taken too seriously. I am looking forward to making some Yeti popsicles as part of Mei's team.
