Overwatch is giving Mercy a new Ultimate

Overwatch healer Mercy will soon play like a totally new character, thanks to some major changes Blizzard is currently testing out on the game's Public Test Region.

Resurrect, Mercy's current Ultimate ability and a mainstay of her arsenal, is getting completely overhauled. First up, it's no longer an Ultimate: it now functions on a 30-second cooldown. It only targets a single hero now, too, instead of resurrecting all players within a set radius. You'll have to be more careful when activating it, as well, since Mercy is no longer invulnerable while activating Resurrect.

To make up for this major Resurrect nerf, Mercy will be getting a brand new Ultimate: Valkyrie. Valkyrie energises Mercy's weapons and abilities for 20 seconds, granting the following buffs:

Caduceus Staff: Mercy’s healing and damage boost beams now affect all allies near the targeted teammate, and the staff’s effective range has been extendedCaduceus Blaster: Granted infinite ammo, while simultaneously increasing damage and fire rateGuardian Angel: Increased range and movement speed

Resurrect: Cooldown is instantly reset when Valkyrie is activated and reduced to 10s after the initial cast

Hover: Mercy gains the ability to fly freely, at increased movement speed

Regeneration (Passive): No longer interrupted when Mercy takes damage

Changes this big don't get rolled out on a whim, and Blizzard has admitted that Mercy's Resurrect Ultimate was causing massive headaches for a lot of players. It rewarded Mercy players who hid in the shadows instead of actively participating in the battle, which was frustrating both for those playing as and against the healer.

With this new Ultimate, Mercy is sure to shake up established Overwatch strategies. Not that the game necessarily needs it, seeing how well it's selling for Blizzard.

In other Overwatch news, Blizzard revealed a new Aussie-themed map will be coming to the game after its debut at Gamescom.
