Fans of multi-SIM phones rejoice, as Huawei's new flagship phone will go on contract with Optus in a dual SIM configuration.

There's a pretty simple rule in Australian telco circles. If a phone is designed with dual SIM capability, there will be a big difference if you buy it outright rather than getting it on contract. Specifically, outright buyers will have dual SIM capability, but those getting the contract phone will have just one active SIM.

Typically that second SIM slot can be used for microSD storage expansion, but the specific models that the big telcos have sourced to date have always been single SIM models.

You know what they say about rules, right?

Optus is breaking that rule with the Huawei P30 and Huawei P30 Pro. It will offer both phones, and if you get them through Optus, they will come with both SIM slots fully enabled. Conversely, while Telstra and Vodafone will also offer both the Huawei P30 and Huawei P30 Pro, their models will only support a single SIM.

In either case you can use that second slot for storage expansion, but only with Huawei's proprietary nano memory ("nm") format, rather than the cheaper and more widely available microSD card format.

We're waiting to see Optus' new Huawei P30 Pro and Huawei P30 plans, which will go on pre-order from today with availability from 16 April. As with other telcos offering the new phones, pre-orders will score a free Sonos One speaker, which is a nice bonus.
