Optus WiFi Talk: make calls even when the mobile network sucks

Trying to make a mobile call on the Optus network but don't have any coverage? If you're able to hook into Wi-Fi instead, new apps for Android and iPhone could save your bacon.

The newly-launched WiFi Talk app lets you use any Wi-Fi network your phone is connected to make calls, even if your Optus reception is iffy. That could be especially useful in office situations, since in-building coverage is variable for every mobile network. Latch onto your office network instead and you should be able to call trouble-free – just use the app rather than your regular dialler.

SAVING MONEY ON MOBILE

So why use WiFi Talk rather than a dedicated chat app such as WhatsApp or Viber? The main benefit is that you can make and receive calls and texts using your existing mobile number. The app works for all current Optus contract and prepaid plans, and you'll pay the same rates to make calls as if you were using the regular mobile network. (Note that the app won't allow Wi-Fi calling for other providers, such as Virgin Mobile or Amaysim, that use the Optus network -- only Optus customers can use it to make outbound calls and texts. It also won't work overseas, even if you've switched on roaming.)

You can download the app for iPhones from the iTunes store below, and the app for Android from Google Play. iPhones need to be running iOS 6.0 or later; Android devices must be Android 4.0 or later.
