Oppo’s R17 offers an in-screen fingerprint reader for only $699

Oppo's newest handsets will hit the Australian market from 12 November with flagship features at a less-than-premium price point.

Oppo's market positioning has largely been around delivering premium style features at more of a mid-range price point, although it did veer into premium price territory with the Oppo Find X earlier this year.

With the Oppo R17 and Oppo R17 Pro, it's back in the more comfortable mid-range space, with a pair of 6.4-inch Full HD+ handsets featuring the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 on the R17 Pro and Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 on the R17 respectively. Those are solid mid-range choices, backed up with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. Sadly, that's fixed storage with no support for microSD card expansion.

Oppo's gone with a minimal drop notch style for the front panel, as well as an in-screen fingerprint reader for the new handsets. It's not quite the first to market in Australia with that feature, with the Huawei Mate 20 Pro already on sale, but then the Oppo R17 and Oppo R17 Pro are considerably less pricey than Huawei's new flagship phone.

In camera terms, the R17 Pro features a front-facing 25MP camera, and triple rear cameras, with 12MP/20MP variable aperture sensors (similar to what you'd find on the Samsung Galaxy Note9 or Samsung Galaxy S9+) plus what Oppo's calling its "Time Of Flight" sensor. That sensor projects out a light beam and measures its reflection to give a proper sense of depth, allowing the R17 Pro to capture 3D photos, although that will have to wait on a software update post-launch to become functional.

The Oppo R17 and Oppo R17 Pro will go on sale from 12 November in Australia, with an RRP of $699 and $899 respectively. They'll be available from JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks, The Good Guys, Woolworths Mobile, Mobileciti and TeleChoice for outright purchase or on contract through Vodafone. At the time of writing, Vodafone's contract pricing wasn't available, but we'll update as soon as it is.
