Where to buy

The Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is the 4G equivalent of the Oppo Reno 5G, but with the 5G modem part not present. That still leaves you with a flagship phone running on a high-end processor, a full-screen display and triple camera array that, as the name suggests, is capable of optical zoom up to 10 times with hybrid zoom features.

  The Oppo Reno range is produced in a variety of colours, but here in Australia we'll see it in just two colour tones. You'll be able to pick it up in either Ocean Green or Jet Black finishes when it goes on sale down under.

  Where notches, teardrops and hole punch cameras are very much the style in play for 2019 flagship phones, Oppo has once again opted for a truly full-screen approach for the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom, similar to the Oppo Find X.

  It's a display that eschews a traditional fingerprint scanner on the rear or side, instead using an in-glass fingerprint sensor. We've seen this in other Oppo phones such as the R17 Pro, as well as competitor products like the Samsung Galaxy S10 or Huawei P30 Pro. There's definitely a learning curve with glass fingerprint sensors, but Oppo's claim is that the sensor in the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is even faster than previous generations to recognise your biometrics, without sacrificing security.

  One feature you will have to sacrifice that you might expect in a premium flagship phone is water resistance. It's a rather obvious limitation of having that pop-up camera that it's much harder to seal it against moisture. Going swimming with the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is not recommended.

Camera

  Oppo pitches itself as the "camera phone" company and for its flagship phones, it rarely disappoints. The Oppo Reno 10x Zoom shares the same camera array that you'll find in the Oppo Reno 5G. That means you get a triple rear camera array combining a 48MP f/1.7 main camera with an 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera and a 13MP f/3.0 periscopic zoom camera.

  While respectable enough on their own, the three cameras work together to offer 10x "hybrid" zoom. Oppo's not alone in offering this feature – it's also found on the Huawei P30 Pro – but the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom has it at a much lower price point than Huawei's flagship phone.

  Around the front the pop-up selfie camera features a 16MP f/2.0 lens. We'll have to leave a verdict on its quality until we've had time to test it, but you'll at least gather some attention thanks to the angular pop-up camera every time you take a group selfie.

Performance

  Historically Oppo tended to keep its prices low by opting for slightly slower, slightly cheaper processors, but this isn't the story for the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom at all. Oppo's packing it with the latest and greatest, with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor and 8GB of RAM on board. Storage is handled with 256GB on board, and you can upgrade that with microSD cards at will.

  The Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is an Android 9 phone, but with Oppo's own "ColorOS" launcher on top. ColorOS significantly rewrites the Android UI in a way that's usually described as being similar to Apple's iOS. That's good news if you're a switcher away from an iPhone, but Android diehards may find the going a little cumbersome.

  Oppo hasn't always supported NFC for Google Pay on its phones, but it's thankfully present on the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom.

Battery life

  The Reno 10x Zoom features a 4,065mAh battery, which is large by current standards, but not the largest in a flagship phone.
  Oppo has its own very fast charging standard, VOOC, that uses its own chargers and cabling. The Reno 10x Zoom uses VOOC 3.0 which it claims is 23.8% faster than the previous generation.

  Fast wired charging is great, but a flagship feature that the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom misses out on is wireless charging. It's not been a common inclusion on Oppo phones to date, but it's not hard to find it on competing smartphones in this price range.

Early outlook

  Flagship phones from Oppo have ranged from the excellent, like the Oppo R17 Pro, to the experimentally odd, as was the case with the Oppo Find X.

  The Oppo Reno 10x Zoom appears to borrow a little from both approaches, and that could make it a spectacular value proposition, especially if the camera lives up to Oppo's heavy hype.
