Oppo announces Oppo R11
Oppo's affordable dual-lens R11 will hit Australia in late July.
With numerous pre-leaks, the existence of the Oppo R11 wasn't all that much of a secret, but at a media launch in Shenzhen today, Oppo has officially taken the wraps off its newest flagship handset.
The Oppo R11 runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 660 SoC. The 660 sits in a mid-range spot for Qualcomm, not quite up to the power play that is the Snapdragon 835, but intended for phones that want solid performance at a set price point. Oppo is matching the Snapdragon 660 up with 4GB of RAM and Android 7.1.1, predictably matched with Oppo's own "ColorOS" overlay, as found on existing Oppo handsets such as the Oppo R9s.
In camera terms, the Oppo R11 will feature dual 16MP and 20MP rear cameras with 2x optical zoom. Dual lens as a camera feature has been something that's largely been a play for the absolute premium market, so Oppo is definitely opening up the feature for more moderately priced phones here. The secondary lens allows for 2x optical zoom, as well as a combined depth of field effect for portrait shots. Oppo's claim is that due to specific Qualcomm image processing optimisations found on the Snapdragon 660, it should have exceptional performance.
Camera technology has been a strong focus for Oppo of late, with its MWC 2017 keynote revolving entirely around the technology it plans to bring to market to offer 5x optical zoom in a smartphone. The Oppo R11 isn't that phone, although it is still expected to launch at some point this year.
The Oppo R11 will feature a 5.5 inch Full HD display. The Oppo R11 will be powered by a 3,000mAh battery.
In Australia, Oppo has sold its phones directly through JB Hi-Fi, as well as on contract, largely through Woolworths Mobile or Optus. In China, the Oppo R11 is expected to sell for around RMB 2,999 or around $585, which would suggest a price point of around $699-$799 is likely once it hits the local market, taking GST into consideration. It's expected to hit the local market in late July.
Oppo also launched the Oppo R11 Plus, a larger screened 6 inch variant with 6GB of RAM and a 4,000mAh battery on board, although there's no specific word on Australian availability for the larger version.
We're in Shenzhen at the launch of the Oppo R11, so stay tuned for our hands-on impressions review.
