Gerberas are one of the most cheerful flowers around, making them the perfect way to congratulate someone or to simply brighten another’s day.
Gerberas are extremely hardy perennial plants. While they cannot survive freezing temperatures or frost, they thrive in very hot climates, even with very little water. They symbolise cheerfulness with their large blooms and bright colours. Gerberas make beautiful, long-lasting additions to both flower arrangements and gardens. In addition, they are relatively easy to care for, given that you live in the right climate.
Due to their beauty and resilience, gerberas make wonderful gifts for just about any occasion. They are one of the longest lasting cut flowers, making them ideal for flower arrangements. They can easily last for up to two weeks when properly cared for. Remember, though, that gerberas are a symbol of cheer and happiness. This means they are perfect for happy occasions like birthdays, graduations or welcoming a newborn. Their cheerful appearance makes them ideal for saying thank you or congratulations. Gerberas are also an excellent choice if you are looking for a "just because" gift to brighten someone's day. This is why they may not be as appropriate for sombre occasions, like a funeral.
If you are thinking of sending Gerberas to a friend or family member, remember that each gerbera colour has a special meaning. Consider the following meanings as you decide what colour is most appropriate for the person you have in mind and the occasion.
Red gerberas symbolise romantic love and passion.
Pink gerberas express gratitude and admiration.
Orange gerberas convey warmth, cheer and happiness.
Yellow gerberas have a similar meaning, expressing cheerfulness and positivity.
White gerberas imply innocence and purity.
Combining a few different gerbera colours in a bouquet can also create different looks and feels. For example, a few stems of white and pale-coloured gerberas create a fresh and innocent look. Intense reds, vibrant oranges and hot pinks, paired together, create a fun and exciting bouquet. A single gerbera stem in an elegant glass vase transmits the idea that the simple pleasures in life are what count. Think carefully about who you want to send gerbera daisies to and why in order to pick the perfect shade or combination of shades. Gerberas are sure to send a meaningful and memorable message to the receiver.
What floral arrangements are best for gerberas?
Gerberas look beautiful on their own, but they also pair well with other flowers in arrangements. The most handsome arrangements balance both colours and textures. The colours in a bouquet should always complement one another. To combine complementary colours, you should choose either harmonising or contrasting colours. Colours that sit next to each other on the colour wheel are harmonious and pair well. As a rule of thumb, combine no more than three to four harmonious colours in a single design and no more than two contrasting colours for best results.
Keep in mind the various textures used in your flower arrangement. Some types of foliage do not compliment gerbera daisies, while others highlight their bright colours and cheerfulness. Glossy foliage and large leaves are ideal for pairing with gerberas. If you want a gerbera flower cluster to really stand out and be the focal point of your gift, try looking for an arrangement with large, slick leaves behind the flowers. The leaves make the flowers stand out, appearing brighter and more intricate. And since gerberas are large bright flowers, consider pairing them with other prominent flowers, like roses.

Gerberas form part of the Asteraceae family, which explains why some people call them gerbera daisies. Gerberas are native to Transvaal, South Africa. In fact, Scotsman Robert Jameson discovered them there in 1884. The gerbera's scientific name, Gerbera jamesonii, recollects his discovery. Shortly thereafter, in 1890, English scientists began gerbera breeding programmes, creating new colour variations and enhancing the plant's general quality. They soon gained popularity worldwide. Today, gerberas are the fifth most popular flower in the world, coming in just after rose, carnation, chrysanthemum and tulip. According to one study, gerberas are also ideal for cleaning up the air. They efficiently remove harmful chemicals from the air while adding humidity creating a cleaner, fresher environment.
Gerbera flowers measure about 18 centimetres in diameter and come in a wide variety of vivid colours including various shades of yellow, orange, red, pink and even deep scarlet tones that compliment their glossy dark green leaves. There are several different kinds of gerberas. Single flower gerberas have a green centre and one row of petals that does not overlap. Duplex or double gerberas have a dark red, green or black centre, as well as two rows of overlapping petals. Crested doubles also have a dark red, green, or black centre. In addition to their two rows of overlapping petals, this kind also has a third inner row of small, short petals. Full-crested double gerberas have overlapping petals and a smaller inner row of petals that completely cover the flower's centre.
