People buy flowers for many different reasons, the most common of course being romance. Brilliant red roses are a common gift from sweethearts and they typically come in either singles or dozens. Small arrangements can also be purchased for a more subdued gift.

However, not all flowers carry a romantic meaning. White lilies are often used to denote sympathy or innocence and may be used in religious contexts. Purple flowers or vivid arrangements of rainbow colours are frequently chosen for birthdays or just to brighten up someone's day. Easter flowers are also a common purchase, with pastel colours, crocuses and daffodils being at the forefront.

How to choose the best flowers to get delivered in Brisbane

When picking out flowers, it's important to consider the reason you are giving a gift to your loved one. The flowers you give to your mother for Mother's Day will obviously differ greatly from the choice you would make for a sweetheart's gift. Learning about flowers and what they mean before you order can help to ensure that your gift is a great match for your recipient.

Birthday bouquets generally call for brightly coloured combinations of flowers. When choosing them, aim for your intended recipient’s favourite colours. If needed, consider complementary colours; blue tends to go well with purple or pink, while yellow tends to combine nicely with blue and green. This is because colours that fall close to one another on the colour wheel are considered complementary.

For contrasting colours, choose colours across from one another on the colour wheel. Green and red are an excellent contrast for Christmas, while blue and gold-toned yellow work well together for summer bouquets. White can be mixed in to offset colours.

Also pay attention to flower meanings. Rose meanings are dictated by colour: red for passion and romance, pink for new relationships or friendly love, white for innocence and purity, yellow for friendship and orange for excitement or celebration. The same colour meanings apply to tulips.

Daffodils carry a get-well message, though tiger lilies are an exotic way to wish luck with money or to denote pride. Gentle forget-me-nots are a great choice for communions or child-oriented bouquets, while orange blossoms denote marriage and longevity within relationships. Likewise, pansies can be an excellent way to let someone know you’re thinking of them.

A few flowers should only be given in specific circumstances. Red poppies are almost exclusively saved for sympathy or memorial events. Likewise, black roses are often considered to be bad luck and should only be chosen if the intended has expressed a deep interest in them.

Hey do you know how to get a hold of black and blue roses?

      Hi Quintin,

      Thanks for your question.

Unfortunately black and blue roses aren’t common as a combination, however you can purchase blue roses from FTD here and black roses from The Perth Florist.

As an alternative, you can try to contact your local florist who might be able to organise black and blue roses for you as a special order.

      Hope that helps!

      Stephanie
