Short course certification programs are courses designed to offer certification in an area where a university degree may not be required. They typically take up to six months to complete, and specialise in a range of areas.

You can find a number of websites offering short courses online, in anything from business management to photography. Some programs are specifically designed to help software developers and IT workers to stay abreast of the latest technology.

You will usually be given a time limit to complete your course (often three, six, or twelve months), but you’ll be able to choose your own hours as to when you complete it. This makes short online courses a great option for anyone who needs flexibility in their study, whether due to work commitments, other study, or caring for dependents.

Who provides short course certifications?

Here you’ll find online courses in computers for beginners, internet for small business, introduction to hospitality management, introduction to journalism, introduction to relationship counselling, resume writing, starting websites with dreamweaver, and comic strips for beginners. Udemy offers a further range of courses, but its short course certifications are designed to be introductory. If you enjoy the course, it’s easy to graduate to a ‘harder’ course and continue your learning.

Australian Vocational Learning Institute

Take a course in a range of disciplines, including business, human resources, customer service, finance, and hospitality. The Australian Vocational Learning Institute also offers longer courses, as well as diplomas and double diplomas. Still not sure if this is the site for you? You can undertake a ‘live demo’ course, with help from a course advisor.

Courses For Success

Yes, the online jobs board can help you get that next job, too. On Courses For Success , you’ll find short courses in accounting, business skills, computer skills, graphic design, IT, multimedia, photography, TESOL, web design, and web development. What are the expenses for short course certification?

How much a short course costs depends on all sorts of factors, including course type, length of course, and institution.

For example, a two day Introduction to Business Analysis course on Dynamic Web Training will set you back $1,210 but a three month Marketing Fundamentals course on Accredited Online Training will cost $480.

The important thing to decide is what this course is worth to you. If by completing it, you’ll unlock a greater earnings potential, then the difference between a $500 course or a $1,000 course is minimal.

Who is eligible for short courses?

Everyone! Short courses are designed to be taken at a introductory level, so you’ll be able to complete them with your current level of understanding of the topic. If you have experience in the area and want to further your skill set, then a Certificate II or higher might be for you.

The main exception to this rule, however, is photography courses. Most will require you to own (or have access to) a DSLR, which can be a pricey commitment. Want to get your hands on a cheap camera? Use a coupon code for any major online electronics store.

What is the duration of the short course certification?

Again, this will vary from course to course.

A similar theme among many courses is a three or six month time limit, during which you can complete the course at any speed you wish. A three month course will typically take around 90 hours to complete.

However, other courses may only run for one to two days. Keep an eye out for course times and structure when you book.

What are the career opportunities of the short course certification?

This is largely up to you, but they can vary greatly.

An RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) will allow you to work in hospitality and events, as you will not be allowed to serve alcohol without one.

A photography course, if you pursue it as a means of work, may lead to a career as a photographer. However, even if you don’t go down this road, there are many values to be gained from the ability to shoot a good picture: you might take on added (photography-related) responsibilities at work, or take original, high-quality photographs for your blog or website.

Courses in specific areas, such as accounting or business management, may require further study before they lead to new career opportunities. That being said, an employer will always look favourably on the candidate who’s decided to improve themselves of their own accord.

      Hi Caz,
      Thanks for your question.
One of your options for a digital media writing course is through Open Colleges, which has a Certificate IV in Professional Writing.
You might also like to look at sites like Udemy, which offers shorter courses for general interest and development.
      Hope that helps!
