Where to buy

OnePlus as a company has a very distinct mission. It's a premium phone provider, but one that focuses on bringing the key premium features to the market at a price point hundreds of dollars cheaper than its competition. This has often involved some feature compromises and while that's still true for the OnePlus 7 Pro, it's also still a phone with plenty of grunt and its own unique story to tell

Design

  The OnePlus 7 Pro's big design selling point is that it skips out on the concept of a notch of any kind at all. All you get from the front is a big, glorious 6.67-inch "Fluid" AMOLED display. It's a 3,120x1,440 pixel panel at 516 PPI with a claimed 90Hz refresh rate. That's a little lower than the Razer Phone 2, but still very impressive for what is a "budget" premium phone.

  So how does OnePlus get away with no front notch or bezel? It features a pop-up mechanised selfie camera that engages when needed. This isn't an entirely new trick and we've seen it from stablemate Oppo in the Oppo Find X for example, but it does allow you to focus entirely on the display.

  There is a price to pay for that nifty pop-up camera though. Where most of today's flagships have a stated water resistance, so they'll survive an accidental drop into water, the OnePlus 7 Pro skips out on that feature. It's understandable it would be tough to seal in a phone with parts that pop up out of the top, but if you're the clumsy type, this might not be the phone for you.

  Like many other flagships in 2019, OnePlus is also skipping out on having a physical fingerprint sensor on the rear or side of its flagship phone. Instead it features an optical fingerprint sensor located underneath the glass of the front display. Unlike the ultrasonic sensor found on the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+, this won't work so well if your fingers are grubby or wet, but it is very convenient.

  The presence of that 6.67-inch display means by definition the OnePlus 7 Pro is a large phone, measuring in at 162.6x75.9x8.8mm with a carrying weight of 206 grams. By flagship standards, that's a moderately heavy device.

Camera

  OnePlus doesn't have the best reputation when it comes to overall camera quality. Its phones in the past have had decent, but not quite leading quality lenses and results, but it's certainly trying its best for the OnePlus 7 Pro.

  At the rear you'll find a triple lens array, comprising a primary 48MP f/1.6 lens, 8MP 3x Optical Zoom f/2.4 lens and 16MP f/2.2 117 degree ultrawide angle lens. It's a trio that should give you plenty of photographic choices while shooting, but we'll have to reserve judgement on how well it performs until we're able to fully test it out.

  At the front of course is that pop-up mechanical selfie camera, with a 16MP f/2.0 lens for taking your own narcissistic shots. As is common with many smartphones these days, you get a face retouching feature built in, so nobody on your Instagram feed needs to know exactly how many wrinkles you've got.

Performance

  OnePlus hasn't skimped out on the processor side, packing in Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 processor with either 6GB, 8GB or 12GB of RAM, depending on the model you buy. That should put it at the forefront of Android phone performance for 2019, which is a nice inclusion for a phone that's substantially cheaper than many of its competitors.

  It also features either 128GB or 256GB of fast UFS 3.0 onboard memory, which should further enhance its overall performance. There's a sting in the tail there, because OnePlus phones have never supported storage expansion. That 128GB or 256GB of storage is all you're going to get.

  The OnePlus 7 Pro is an Android 9 phone, but it's running with OnePlus' heavily modified "OxygenOS" launcher on top. OxygenOS adds a number of customisations on top of stock Android, although your experience may vary depending on how keen you are on precisely how it reskins Android. OnePlus is at least one of the better manufacturers when it comes to providing updates to the latest version of the core Android operating system.

Battery life

  The OnePlus 7 Pro is powered by a solid 4,000mAh battery. That's not quite the top of the premium phone battery tree, but it's still perfectly respectable and it should be capable of full-day battery life without too many problems.

  OnePlus supplies its own custom fast charger for the OnePlus 7 Pro, which it dubs "Warp Charge". It's still fundamentally USB-C, so other chargers should work, but if you want to top it up quickly, you'll need to keep OnePlus' specific charger handy.

  What you won't be able to do with the OnePlus 7 Pro is charge wirelessly. It's a pretty common feature for flagship phones, but it's one that OnePlus sacrifices in the name of keeping costs down.

  OnePlus' whole business model has long rested on providing key premium features and design at a lower cost than the prevailing trend. That's undeniably true for the OnePlus 7 Pro, because it's a mix of true flagship features, like the design, camera and processor, swirled in with features you might expect to find, such as wireless charging or water resistance.
