Ola launches in Melbourne with free rides

Score two free rides with new rideshare service Ola from today.

New rideshare service Ola has finally launched in Melbourne after having launched in Perth in January and Sydney last month.

Eager to steal customers from rivals Uber and Taxify the rideshare service is offering two free trips to new users in Melbourne, worth up to $20 each.

It's a step down from Sydney's launch offer, which featured three free rides per new customer, but nevertheless is still a great deal, particularly in a city where a $20 ride can go a long way.

In addition to the free credit, all subsequent rides will be charged at 50% off until further notice.

You can download the Ola app to redeem your free rides now through iTunes store or via Google Play.

Ever competitive, Ola has been known to match rates with Uber and Taxify. Unfortunately, when we tried to access its Melbourne rates card via the app it refused to load, suggesting the app is still a little buggy for Melbournians. However, in Sydney Ola shares the same base fares, distance changes and ride time charge fees as both Uber and Taxify, so we're anticipating it to be the same in Melbourne, too.

At 50% off in Melbourne, even after you've exhausted your free credit, if rates remain competitive, you stand to save up to half on fares by siding with Ola – at least during its promotional period.

Ola only offers two types of ride: prime sedan which is its economy ride and on-par with UberX, and prime SUV which is Ola's answer to UberXL.

Following its launch into Melbourne, Ola plans to expand into Adelaide, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
