Garry’s Mod 2 “might never come out”

It may be one of the more desired sequels of all time, but fans will have to wait a while yet for a follow-up to the 2004 cult classic.

Earlier this week we published the full list of games earmarked for the HTC Vive virtual reality headset and the article attracted plenty of attention from gamers all around the world. Among them was Garry Newman of Facepunch Studios and legendary creator of the popular sandbox indie game Garry’s Mod (aka GMod).

In an interview with PCgamesN dated September 2015, Newman made comments that seemingly confirmed a sequel to Garry’s Mod 2 was on the way, and that it would be coming to VR. The news went global and the game was reported to be heading to Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. With that in mind, we included it on our list, but as it turns out we did so incorrectly.

Upon reading the list, Newman tweeted that Garry’s Mod 2 wasn’t coming to the HTC Vive because it “doesn’t exist.” Confused by the seemingly conflicting statements, we reached out to the developer to get some clarification on the game’s status and here’s what he had to say:

“[Garry’s Mod 2] is something we're playing with - it might never come out, but it might. It might have VR implementation, but it might not. Nothing is really decided.”

So in short, there is nothing new to report on the game and it sounds like it is still very much in early prototyping. We apologise to readers inconvenienced by the inclusion of Garry’s Mod 2 on our list of HTC Vive games earlier this week; rest assured that entry has been corrected and the list now stands at 124 titles. If and when we hear more about a sequel to Garry’s Mod, we will let you know.
