The GTX 1080 released as Nvidia's top-of-the-line graphics card back in 2016, and despite it losing that crown to the upgraded GTX 1080 Ti in 2017, it is still a mainstay of many high-end gaming PCs. Armed with 8GB of GDDR5X RAM and sporting memory speeds of 10Gbps, the GTX 1080 can handle everything from standard 1080p gaming up to 4K, even managing to hit 60fps at 4K in many modern titles. Virtual reality poses little challenge as well, with the GTX 1080 more than capable of delivering stable performance with VR headsets like the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

Beyond the cost of the card itself, it's important to be aware of the GTX 1080's physical requirements. Not only do you need a power supply of at least 500W to provide the card with sufficient energy, you'll want to have plenty of space inside your PC case, too: the GTX 1080 is so bulky that it covers two slots on the motherboard and typically runs 266.7mm or more in length.
