The Cowboys failed to fire a shot last year, with the retirement of club great Johnathan Thurston and then the pre-season sacking of Ben Barba seriously impacting their campaign before it even began.

A mini three-game winning streak mid-season, including a strong victory over eventual grand finalists the Raiders in Canberra, only offered a brief reprieve for coach Paul Green and the club.

They also knocked off the eventual premiers with a win over the Sydney Roosters in round 17, but that was their only triumph during a bleak 9-game stretch. A 14th-placed finish was well below expectations. Yet there is excitement for 2020 and it largely revolves around the signing of former Queensland Origin star and NFL hopeful Valentine Holmes.

Green still has some credits in the bank for coaching North Queensland to their maiden premiership back in 2015. But the Cows' powerbrokers will expect to see tangible improvements this year. After missing the finals the past two seasons, we all know coaching can be a brutal business if that trend continues.

How to watch North Queensland Cowboys NRL matches

While Queensland rivals the Broncos enjoy a competition-best 15 matches on free-to-air television in 2020, the Cowboys won't be anywhere near as prominent. North Queensland have just 6 matches remaining on Channel 9 and 12 on Fox League. So Cowboys fans should seriously consider a subscription to Foxtel or Kayo Sports, especially if they want to see their new-look team over the first half of the season.

From rounds 5-7 and 11–14, there's no North Queensland match on free-to-air. In terms of subscriptions, Kayo is the cheapest available option at $25/month for a Basic subscription. That gives you access to two screens or devices. For $10/month more you get a third screen.

Kayo also has an impressive array of features such as SplitView, Interactive Stats, Kayo Minis and No Spoilers. Take a look at our Kayo vs Foxtel guide to see how they compare. Kayo also has a 14-day free trial for you to give it all a test run. In total it offers more than 50 sports.

The other option to watch North Queensland matches in 2020 is the NRL Live Pass app. Telstra customers are able to access this for free. Unfortunately NRL Live Pass is limited to just a seven-inch display size.

North Queensland Cowboys history

Largely an NRL laughing stock in the early years following their introduction in 1995, that changed when North Queensland made it all the way to the 2005 grand final, losing to Wests Tigers.

That season coincided with the arrival of superstar Johnathan Thurston. It would take another decade, but Thurston finally led the club to premiership glory with a victory over the Broncos in a classic 2015 decider.

The Cows enjoy fervent support in Townsville and with Holmes joining the likes of Jason Taumalolo and skipper Michael Morgan, they will be expected to push back towards the NRL's top 8 in 2020.
