The 2021 Oscars had no runway winner, but Nomadland did make headlines for winning the most awards: three, including Best Picture.

Additionally, Chloé Zhao became the first woman of colour to win a Best Director Oscar, while Frances McDormand took home her third Academy Award for Lead Actress.

Nomadland follows a woman in her sixties, Fern, who packs a van and embarks on a journey through the US after losing her job due to the Great Recession. Along the way, she's looking for work and meeting others who live a nomadic existence. The film features real-life nomads who give Nomadland a feeling of authenticity.

The movie was inspired by Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century, a non-fiction book by Jessica Bruder. Director Chloé Zhao, also known for Songs My Brothers Taught Me and The Rider, perfectly captures both the beauty and the melancholy of living on the road.

Fern is a widow who doesn't have a lot of options, but who discovers a new community when she decides to move around and take on seasonal work. That doesn't mean that her journey isn't filled with all sorts of indignities.

Feeling like you're no longer part of a productive community is harsh – and grieving your former life might seem more bearable when surrounded by beautiful vistas, but it's still a struggle. However, being "houseless," as the main character puts it, isn't always the end of the world. It can also be a new beginning.

"Please watch our movie on the largest screen possible," Frances McDormand said while accepting the Academy Award for Best Picture. The visuals are stunning, so we strongly advise you to do just that.
